Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Nigeria

Nigeria is one of the most populous countries in Africa. It is known for its many attractions for tourists. These include the beaches, mountains, cultural diversity, as well as the traditions of the local people.

Its archeological marvels, ancient cities, kingdoms and diverse regions make Nigeria a country well worth visiting.

Accommodation in Nigeria is based mainly around hostels because of their affordability and availability. Depending on what attractions you's like to see, you are bound to find more than a few options for hostels in the country. Most hostels feature good local cuisine and are run by hospitable landlords.

While in Nigeria, you should visit the Ibeno beach, one of the largest beaches in the world - stretching for some 240km. It features mangrove forests, cool breezes, lush surrounding greenery and has huge waves. Located in Ibeno in the Akwa Ibom state of Nigeria, this is definitely a fun retreat.

You can also take a look at the history of the forests in Nigeria at Ngwo Pine Forest. This is one of the more romantic destinations to visit because of the pine trees, its quiet setting and the many gentle streams and caves in the area.

Other naturally stunning areas in Nigeria include Awhum. This region has many lakes, a waterfall and a monastery which is open to visitors. It is a religious site, with streams leading up to the famous Awhum Monastery.

Another religious site is the Arochukwu Long Juju Slave Route, with the Shrine of Ibn Ukpabi and the Monument of Kamula.

If you want to see the history of humankind, you can check out the footprint of Ukhuse Oke, a prehistoric giant whose footprint is found on the rocks in-between the villages of Ukhuse-oke and Ukhuse-osi.

And, for an insight into medieval times you can visit Gashaki-Gumpti National Park instead.

This is Nigeria’s largest national park and is located within the Mountain of Wind. It isn’t the only man-made attraction in the country, either.

The Alok Ikom Monoliths are a must-see. These are 300 carved stones, standing tall in mysterious circles. The Monoliths are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Another World Heritage Site in the country is the tribute to the goddess of fertility Osun. The Osun State has a region called Oshogbo, which features many shrines, sculptures, artwork, and monuments created as a tribute to Osun. Located along the Oshun River, this area is a place you have to see while in Nigeria.

The heritage doesn’t stop here, though. The city of Benin has many old monuments and sculptures including the statue of Emotan opposite the Oba market in the city. The Oba Royal Palace is also located here, near the King’s Square. You can find many old bronze artefacts, shrines, and ivory items on offer here.

Other royal constructions include the wall of Queen Amina in the city of Zaria. The Queen built many walls around the city to protect it from sieges. One of these stands remains, a testament to the strategic mind of Queen Amina.

One final must see destination in Nigeria is the Ogbunike Cave Complex. These are caves that can be reached by climbing down over 300 steps into the earth. Filled with historic and spiritual artefacts and stories, these caves are one of the best ways to experience Nigeria’s heritage.
