Two Mile Bay
Taupo is often overlooked by visitors to the North Island of New Zealand, but with the town sitting on the shores of a lake the size of Singapore, that just means there's a lot of travelers missing out on one hell of a town.
Taupo has everything that a backpacker could want! For lively nightlife, there are plenty of options available. If you like beautiful scenery, there are miles and miles of lakeside walks and springs abound; the Huka Falls are spectacular and in the distance there are the mountains of the Tongariro Range including Ngauruho, better known as Mount Doom in the "Lord of the Rings" films. Adrenaline activities are covered as well. There's bungee jumping, jet boating, rafting; also Taupo is one of the best and cheapest places in the world to scare yourself witless by jumping out of a plane. Taupo hostels, of which there are many, will happily arrange deals and discounts for all these activities and more.
In addition, there are geothermal parks (perfect for a spot of pampering), trout fishing, thermal baths, sailboats on the lake, the Tongariro Crossing (reckoned by many to be the best one-day walk in the world), winter skiing, and horse riding! Taupo is certainly not a place to sit still!
The town has all the facilities a backpacker needs, with plenty of large supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants, and other travelers. It's a great pitstop between Rotorua and Wellington and a place where it's easy to lose track of time and watch a week or two drift by.

Two Mile Bay
"My favourite place in Taupo. Small, friendly, not a party place, just good company, family atmosphere and clean rooms. Across the road from windsurfing and closest to the skydiving." … "Nice hostel. The owners are lovely people. Be aware of the dorms attached to the outside kitchen. Avoid them if you want to sleep at night! Also, get them to book you in for a skydive. A brilliant experience for the cheapest price in NZ." …...
"Taupo Central Backpackers is located right in the middle of the city and is just a stone's throw away from the huge Lake Taupo. There are numerous shops, bars, restaurants, and other amenities close by. The hostel itself is rather tatty and could seriously do with some redecorating. There are areas of corridor with no carpet - just bare concrete and the dorms are quite shabby too. All of the dorms have an ensuite bathroom. There is a lack...
"Blackcurrant Backpackers is a friendly and pleasant hostel. The building's design encourages guests to sit outside together and socialize. The Location Blackcurrant is only a few blocks from the Intercity bus stop, though it's easy to get turned around and walk the wrong way. By car, it's an equally easy turn off Spa Road. Look for the Pak 'N' Save and a "The Warehouse" store -- Blackcurrant is across the street from "The Warehouse"...
HI - Taupo YHA - Action Down Under Hostel
"HI - Taupo YHA - Action Down Under Hostel is really nice if you want to experience Lake Taupo and the mountains. As this is a YHA hostel, you will receive a discount with a YHA membership card. The Location The hostel is situated in a nice neighbourhood of Taupo, about a five-minute walk to the nearest shops and about fifteen minutes to the iSite and ten minutes to the main bus terminal. Bars and restaurants are all within walking...
Rainbow Lodge Backpackers
"Rainbow Lodge is a small hostel close to the heart of Taupo. It is a rather old, wooden building and the rooms are small. The rooms are heated in winter, but the heating is not turned on before 6 or 7 p.m., so it can get pretty cold during the day. The Location The hostel is located close to the city center of Taupo. If you arrive by bus, it is approximately a fifteen-minute walk from the bus depot to get there. They are also happy to...
"Berkenhoff Lodge is a quiet retreat away from the busy centre of Taupo, yet it is a pleasant twenty minutes' walk or five minutes' drive to the shopping centre, and a fifteen-minute walk to the lake foreshore. The hostel has a well-equipped kitchen, an upstairs lounge with a view of the back lawn, and a bar downstairs that is open each evening from 6 p.m. offering BBQ meals for those who prefer not to cook their own. During the day the bar...
Silver Fern Lodge
"Just loved it - So new, so nice, so clean! I was really really impressed with this hostel, it was awesome having our own bathroom! And just five minutes from town. This is definitely recommended." … "My boyfriend and I have been travelling around NZ and Australia for three months and still agree that the Silver Fern Lodge was the best accommodation for backpackers we've seen!" … "Cleanest and most comfortable - As we traveled...
"Tiki Lodge, a BBH hostel, is a short walk from town with beautiful views of the lake. It feels very clean and modern, but a little too impersonal to be totally comfortable. The Location Tiki Lodge is an easy, fifteen-minute walk from the center of town and the iSite and is only about three minutes from the lakefront. Parking is available. It's in a more residential area of town, so it's much quieter than staying in the central...
Taupo Urban Retreat
"Taupo Urban Retreat is a nice hostel in Taupo. Upbeat, popular, and friendly, you'll probably enjoy it too. Taupo Urban Retreat is located between the main grocery store and the lake, only a few short blocks from both. There are lots of shops nearby as well. The large dorms were some of the nicer we stayed at, with huge spacious rooms, lots of windows, and high ceilings with sloping walls. You even get your own staircase up to the room....
"Excellent!!!! - We spent just one night in Tonys Lodge and it was a good surprise, they were lovely with us. Lake Taupo is just near the house. We had breakfast and a Walk with Tony in the morning. I recommend this place." … "… in one, a King bed room and two dorm rooms each sleeping upto 4 people, the dorm rooms can be booked as a room or by the bed. All our rooms have hand basins, wardrobes, heaters, electric blankets, radio...

Finns Global Backpackers & Bar
"Finns Global Backpackers & Bar has a friendly staff and a good location for people looking to explore Taupo's nightlife, but the facilities are out of date and it is very unsocial. The Location This hostel is centrally located right on the edge of the Taupo central business district. It's only a couple blocks from the iSite, about five blocks from the intercity bus stop, and only minutes away from the lake. It's located across from a...

"… in the market. We are fully equipped to accommodate to your wants and needs, from having chocolates and flowers in your room on arrival to just having the room heated to the perfect temperature for late arrivals on those chilly Taupo winter nights. "… Taupo is New Zealand's largest lake, situated in the adventurous Central North Island region, half way between Auckland and Wellington. Rafting, skydiving and the world famous Tongariro Crossing are just some reasons to come and stay at the YHA Taupo backpacker hostel. The YHA Taupo hostel consists of double, twin and multi-share backpacker accommodation in the main building and a fully self-contained lodge which is perfect...
Taupo Travel Tips & Suggestions
Taupo is a great place. I enjoyd every bit of it. The guys are very hot hehehe. But I recommend Taupo to any travellers. There are heaps of activites e.g. walks, skydiving, the lake, and going to the mountains. There's always somethng to do here.
Taupo has to be one of my favourite places in New Zealand. The skydiving is a must and the Tongariro crossing was amazing. Anybody of reasonable fitness could do this trek without too many problems but just watch your footing! As for night life... I can vauguely remember a night at the Holy Cow... madness!
Being a New Zealander, I've been to Taupo on road trips plenty of times. It's probably my favourite place in NZ (North Island anyway). There's tons to do in winter and summer, and it's absolutely beautiful. Nightlife's good too, being a tourist town. And I would recommend Taupo Tandem Skydiving, it's the best thing I've EVER done (and cheap too, only $200NZ for a 12,000ft jump). Also do the Taupo Bungy while your there, check out DeBretts Thermal Resort (big natural hot water pools) as well for a unique NZ experience, especially at night. A must stop over for anyone travelling New Zealand.
Taupos a very cool place - I would definitely recommend at least 3 days there. It has lots of free walks and stuff to do.
