Tamarindo, Costa Rica, is a very popular beach destination for tourists located on the northern Pacific shore. The town offers many tours and activities as well as lazy beach days soaking up the warm sun. The town is also quite famous for its surf and surfer culture. Tamarindo is very developed and touristy to the point that in the downtown, you can easily forget that you are in Costa Rica. For an authentic Costa Rican experience, rent a bicycle, car, or motorbike for the day and ride into some of the smaller, less developed towns and soak up some culture.

The hostels in Tamarindo vary from party/resort-style hostels to family-friendly, home-style accommodation. Tamarindo hostels are mainly centrally located and within walking distance to amenities, banks and ATMs, restaurants and bars, the beach and the downtown strip. Due to the high amount of visitors, it is recommended to do some research and book accommodation before arriving.

Tamarindo can be difficult to reach without splurging on an expensive shuttle from a tour company. The roads on the Nicoya peninsula can be very slow (especially in the rainy season) and the buses can be few and far between. Without a car, you may want to spend more money on a shuttle to save time and stress.
