Lisbon is great. There is a ton to do. Wander around the old Expo grounds, wander the Hills, and windy street of the Alfama. For some beach time take the 20 min train to Cascais, or Estoril. Go to Sintra and see the Castle. Be warned that if you look under 30 and are walking around the main area of Lisbon you will likely be pestered by drug dealers, just say no and ignore them. Much of Lisbon is kind of sketchy. although safe during the day it is recommended that you stay on well lit and unisolated streets at night. Also options for eating or having a coffee start becoming limited after 10pm. Try eating at Restaurante Tripeiro at 70 Rua dos Correiros in the Baixa. Great food for decent prices.
Oasis Backpackers' Mansion Hostel in Lisbon Of all the hostels I have stayed in (over forty) this is right up there with the best. The big common room (with very comfortable seating and free internet access), dining area and kitchen make socialising easy, which is always good when traveling solo and nice big, clean bathrooms which come as a relief after weeks spent in hostels with varying standards. There were free Portuguese classes and nice, home-cooked meals and beer served up at reasonable prices every evening which again made everyone get to know each other well and it really did feel like a home away from home. The only small downside is that it's a little tricky to find but it is within a few minutes walk of the main nightlife in the city (Barrio Alto) and Lisbon is small enough to ensure that it isn't an issue. Stay here if you can.
Travellers House Hostel in Lisbon I traveled for three months and this was the best hostel I stayed at. It is in a ridiculously good location (there is even a tourist information booth right outside the door!), it is clean, with really nice beds. Free internet is great and the free breakfast is amazing (this woman makes you scrambled eggs right there for free!). There are two lounge areas one with a TV with cable (almost all channels in English) and the other with drinks for sale. Every night I was there people hung out there until late, it was such a chill and amazing atmosphere! Stay at this hostel!
Lisbon Lounge Hostel in Lisbon Stay here! This hostel is new and vibrant, and everything is stylish, including the showers. It may be harder to find so look behind the newspaper stand where the address shows. The best part is the sweet younger couples who run the place. They are so helpful and love hanging out just as much as the other backpackers. Make sure when you stay you take a day trip to Sintra.
HI - Lisbon - Catalazete - Oeiras Hostel in Catalazete We stayed here in September 2003 and it was GREAT! Having breakfast watching the sea is something you'll never forget! I'd like to advise everyone to STAY AT THIS YOUTH HOSTEL, you won't regret it :-)
Lisbon Calling in Lisbon i was so lucky to find a place like lisbon calling -- all by chance. the staff cleaned up a beautiful, charming old building; added a great kitchen and some really cool bunk beds. the staff are so nice, helpful, friendly, and just chill. the place is clean, and colorful, and quite honestly i dont think there's much more that you could want in a hostel.
Lazy Crow & Co. Guesthouse in Lisbon Great place. Big rooms, big kitchen to use, free Internet, TV, and a great garden in the back to relax and chat away the whole night. I liked it a lot.
Rituals Backpackers Cascais Beach Hostel in Cascais I've been to over thirty different hostels in Europe and Australia and this one is among the top five. It has a great location, sparkling facilities, clean and comfy beds. It is quite small and is basically built like your average house with garden and pool, so it is easy to feel at home plus makes it easy to meet other people. It is owned by a lovely young couple who will do everything to make your stay there great. (Don't be misled by the name though, the good surf is not in Cascais but a ten-minute ride away in Guincho.) Highly recommended!
Lisbon Poets Hostel in Lisbon This is one of the best hostels that I've stayed in. I was absolutely amazed by the cleanliness of the hostel. The bathrooms were always very clean, the same goes for the bedrooms and the bedsheets. Everyone who works there was very warm and friendly, very respectful, and helpful. The place has a calm and quiet feeling -- a very nice place to go to after the chaos of the big city. In the evening they burn scented candles in the common room and you can read or talk to other travellers. The atmosphere is wonderful, but it's not a "party" hostel, if that's what you're looking for. The neighborhood is safe, and it's close to the bars in Bairro Alto, or the shopping zone in Chiado, or the Alfama and the Castle -- it's all a walking distance from the hostel. It's really centrally located (though in Lisbon you will always have to walk hundreds of stairs and uphills to get anywhere). The price is not expensive for a city like Lisbon, and it's definitely worth every cent.
Alfama Village Hostel in Lisbon I have stayed in many hostels around the world, and this place tops them all. It is very new and in the very best part of Lisbon -- Alfama, where I felt as if I was transported to the past. It is a small hostel and very personal. Each night I chatted with the owners. I cannot say anything bad about this place. If you go to Lisbon, you have must stay here. Perfect for people looking for a cozy place to chill, relax, meet great people, and explore Lisbon.
Rituals Backpackers Lisbon Hostel in Lisbon great atmosphere, clean, friendly and helpful staff who is always at your service when you need help, you can get in twenty-four hours, very good accommodation.
Lisbon Old Town Hostel in Lisbon One of the best hostel in my Portugal tour! The staff is very friendly and nice, breakfast is quite large, location is near the city center, and rooms are spacious. There's just two little negative side -- girls bathroom is quite small and kitchen is not so well equipped. Anyway, the hostel has a very good atmosphere so you can socialize really easily! I really enjoyed it!
Two Squared - Rei de Copas Hostel in Sintra A very good hostel in a lovely city! I had a big room, clean and full of light! Also linen and towels were clean. Nice staff and great location! Maybe shared bathrooms should be cleaned more than once a day. they were always a little dirty.
