The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Ile-de-Groix Hostel is in an exquisitely wonderful location on a pretty little island off the coast of Brittany. It offers dorms, camping facilities, and self-catering kitchens. There is not actually one main building, but dorms, kitchens, reception, toilets, and showers are scattered in separate small shed-like buildings and old concrete bunkers belonging to this former military coast guard station. It is a very unusual type of place due to the military buildings
The Location
Perched on the cliffs overlooking the sea with a wonderful view over to the mainland, the hostel enjoys a uniquely beautiful location. A little footpath leads from the grounds down to a lovely sheltered beach in a tiny cove. The hostel is about twenty minutes by bike from Port Tudy (main "town") where the ferry boats arrive. The port is low on the coast so the approach to the hostel is at first quite steep. It is not easy to find as it is not signposted (like almost always in France). Locals will gladly describe the route to travelers but there is no indication on the road as to where the hostel actually is. Watch out for a telephone cell on the road to Kervaillet (on the left for people coming from Port Tudy) -- it is at the top of the little road leading to the hostel and neighbouring camp site.]
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are mostly in the bunker-type concrete cells. There is also a large bunk-room in a "normal" building but when full is dreadfully overcrowded and with only one window, suffocating in summer. The four toilets are all outside and amazingly clean considering the crowds of campers and hostelers. The four showers are in a small separate building and also kept as clean as possible by cleaning staff.
Common Spaces
There is an open space between the kitchen and dorm buildings covered with a canopy roof where people can eat in bad weather. Otherwise there are tables and seating outside. There is also a small common room with tables inside the kitchen building. Two tiny narrow kitchens are located at the reception side of the grounds. There is another kitchen building on the other side of the hostel grounds that is not so crowded. Most of the grounds surrounding the hostel buildings are covered in a myriad small tents.
Summary
The location of the hostel is unbeatable for a summer holiday. The island is great for long walks, easy cycling, and bathing. There are free traditional Breton dancing courses for tourists in the cultural centre of Port Tudy, the pretty little main town of the island. The hostel is obviously very popular, especially with young people. The staff is really lovely and organises group activities such as boules competitions, barbecue evenings. Although extremely crowded, the hostel is quite clean and there is a very friendly, convivial atmosphere.
