The Hostelz.com Review
The youth hostel is located near the "Place des Heroes", which is near the tourist office. At the tourist office, they will give you a map to the hostel. It is a fairly small town, so it is possible to walk around to the sites and there are several bakeries, postcard shops, and cafes nearby.

The building is old, but the rooms are newly painted, and there is a small bathroom and clean shower (separate) on each floor. The water tap in the shower is a continuous spray, which is rare, since most hostels have taps that you have to keep pressing every minute. It is very clean and the hot water is actually hot.

There is a nice view of the town, although the youth hostel itself is quite quiet and the common room is often empty. There is a sink in the bedrooms and it is sometimes possible to have your own room. There are no lockers to keep valuables, however the rooms lock so you can leave things there if you are alone. The hallways are often dark (there are signs posted everywhere saying to turn off the lights in order to conserve energy). Overall, it is a safe, clean, yet quiet hostel.

A great place to stay
I stayed at the hostel late May 2008 and found it an most enjoyable experience in such a historic town. So much history and so many things to do. Thanks to the guy behind the desk who actually gave me some stamps to mail post cards back to Australia as well as let me check my emails for free on his computer.

The Arras hostel is pretty good -- clean rooms, not-too-scuzzy showers, and free breakfast with unlimited coffee. The staff are nice, and the hostel is in a very convenient location. The only reason I don't give it a higher rating is that while we were there the door code was not functioning and instead of fixing it or keeping a staff member there throughout the night, they told us all we had to be back every night by 10 p.m.! Not that there's a huge nightlife in Arras, but it was quite inconvenient.

I stayed with my family at the hostel for half term in October. It is a lovely location and we met some great people. It is a shame about the staff -- sitting in the open plan office area, having private telephone conversations, and somehow forgetting that there is a hostel to keep clean. Frequently when the kitchen needed cleaning it was because the staff had left their belongings behind.
