This isn't a hostel since they don't offer shared dormitory rooms, but it's a reasonably cheap place to stay that may be of interest to young backpackers. It's located a few blocks from the center of downtown Berkeley and the campus, and it's about two blocks from a BART stop (a metro train that will get you to downtown San Francisco in about 30 minutes for a few bucks).
It has a basic kitchen, a TV/reading room, and some other small common areas. It isn't exceptionally modern or clean, and it does have a bit of an old musty smell. The bathrooms are about average. The age range and backgrounds or the guests are very diverse, and it doesn't have the fun/young/social atmosphere of a youth hostel. Aside from that, it is in a convenient location, the noon checkout time is convenient, and the price is very reasonable for a place to stay in the Bay Area.
