The Hostelz.com Review
Hostel Montestella is quite unique in that it's in a building which has several different hotels and hostels on each of its six floors. When you enter you have to find the reception among a few other reception offices. There is an elevator which takes you up to the hostel on the 5th floor, but it's an old elevator and it may be a scary experience for some.

The bedrooms are ok. The bedding and room are clean and simple. Security is there, but it's not great. Each room has only one key which is supposed to be left at reception. The doors don't seem very secure however, and anyone could walk in off the street and get into the hostel section of the building. It's kind of in a dodgy area too. It's very close to the station, but it's a bit scary to walk around at night.

There are some basic facilities at the hostel. There's a sort of kitchen and a dining room. The tiny kitchen has coke and coffee machines, a fridge, microwave, and two hotplates. There's not much in the way of utensils. If you are lucky you might find a pot with no handle to boil water in. Yogurt containers make good cups whilst staying at this place. You probably don't want to cook while here anyway as the kitchen is unkempt and dirty. There is no hostel atmosphere here and it's not a place that's designed to be fun.

The worst part about this hostel is the bathrooms are just so filthy. Not the kind of filth that you might expect at the end of the day when everyone has trampled dirty shoes in all day. No. It's the kind of dirty that shows that the showers have obviously never been cleaned -- ever. There is scum coating the walls and fluffy mould growing out of the corners. The drains are blocked in all six of the showers and there is no toilet paper to be found most of the time. It has quite possibly the filthiest bathrooms in any hostel in the whole of Europe. And to make it worse there is absolutely nowhere to put your towel and clothes. Not even a door handle to hang them off. You have a choice of the filthy wet floor or the toilet to put your stuff on. The water pressure, however, is good and you will probably even get hot water, but you won't be able to enjoy it because you will be standing in a pool of the last person's soap scum desperately trying to wash in the tiny cubicle without touching the walls and then get the hell out.

If the better hostels are full and you're looking for a cheap hostel near the train station, and you don't mind skipping a shower, this hostel may be a reasonable option.

Hostel Montestella is associated with some other businesses. The Stargate Hotel, which is located in the same building, shares a reception desk with Hostel Montestella. They are also associated with a couple of nearby internet places. You get half an hour free internet per days stay at one of the internet places which is also a laundromat. This one is ok. The other internet place (the one on Via Maghera that you walk past when walking from the train station if you follow the hostels directions) possibly should be avoided since we were overcharged for internet use there.

1 I stayed here in December 2005. I already had read what people thought of this hostel before going, so I was prepared to the challenge. Here's my verdict: this place REALLY sucks! This is a very old 5 store building where more than 10 'Hotels' operate: they put a door on a corridor and call it 'Hotel Stargate' or whatever. This one is amazing: the bathrooms are out of the rooms and shared and the ratio of persons per bathroom is about 15; there were hair and used hygienic paper everywhere, not enough water pressure to have a shower (I choose only have one each two days) and the drains in the shower is blocked so you have to close the water unless you want to have your feet washed on all this dirty water. I was asked to change rooms (that's the way the fit the 'womens room' or 'mixed room' offer they do) and the new one was shared with even more people than before. This seems to be a common practice in this hostel. About the area, if you can choose an hotel close to any metro station, it will be ok: touristic Rome is relatively small. I had to sleep with my passport and documents in my pockets and with my camera around my leg because there's no security here: anyone can enter and just wait a door to be open to have access to the 'hotels'. The breakfast consists in a small croissant (cornetto) and a glass of milk. Take your time to look and even pay more, but don't came here.

1 They lied about EVERYTHING. The 'breakfast' they advertised consisted of one (and only ONE) tiny croissant, and a tea or coffee in a plastic cup. It was pathetic. The guys in the office were confrontational and rude, and the lady in the kitchen was rude. The common room, and breakfast room are in the same room (just a small room with tables and chairs) and the free internet access was 15 mins free at a laundrette down the road run by two sleazy idiots. Oh and we wouldnt recommend using the bathrooms in the morning - they are worse than public toilets (hair everywhere, ash etc,). Wouldn't recommend staying here unless you were desperate.

2 Well, I guess that for the price it wasn't as bad as it could've been but the place was kind of lame. Our bathroom was like 5 feet by 5 feet so it was really REALLY cramped. It had a shower, with cold water only, a bidet and a toilet, all in that tiny little area. Also the water leaked all onto the floor and there was nothing you could do about it. It is only about five minutes from Termini, and there are restaurants and shops and the Coliseum all within maybe 15 minutes tops, walking. The room was pretty clean, but hot, the sink wasn't in the bathroom (odd, no?). it had a TV but I don't think it worked, and no Internet, by the way. I probably wouldn't stay here again, but I've only been to Rome once and it might be better than other places, who knows. The location is a bit odd, but only because this one building houses like four to five hostel/hotels so the sign isn't a big one. Use the directions and you'll find it.

4 I was there in August 2004. It is a clean, calm, friendly place. The staff were nice, especially Farid, who was very cooperative and understanding. The hostel is close to Termini, though the street was quite calm. The dorms are spacious and constantly cleaned. There are a lot of showers with hot water, but nothing to hang your clothes on. I enjoyed the peace and the safety of the place . The main three drawbacks are: there's no luggage storage; no change of sheets, although I stayed there for ten nights; and finally, the Romanian girl at breakfast NEVER smiles—she prefers reading the morning papers!

3 A cheap and nice hostel near Termini station. I was there in June, 2004, and it was okay. There were only two problems: there are no lockers, and no Internet (despite what's said in the description). For Internet access you have to go to an Internet café that's two blocks away, and still you have to pay two euros for fifteen minutes. For safety, this hostel has a camera control system at the entry and in the corridors. There is only one key for each room: the last one leaving the room locks it. The showers are all right; nevertheless, if you take a late shower you might not have hot water. (But then you can use the shower on the lower floor at the "Stargate Hotel;" it's run by the same owner.) There is a maid every day who cleans the rooms and bathrooms, and changes your sheets. The hostel provides a free breakfast. Despite feeling a lack of safety, I had no problem during my stay, and had good nights. It's a nice place for small budgets.
