Guilin Backstreet Youth Hostel is a member of the Hostelling International group and of a good standard that is generally consistent in all their hostels.
The Location
Although the hostel's own directions are not all that easy to follow, you don't need them. The hostel is relatively easy to find. It is only five minutes in a taxi from the train or bus station. Just ask for the Sheraton hotel -- it is right next door. It is a five-minute walk into the center and in a quiet spot, so ideally located.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are clean, but somewhat dark. All the rooms including the dorms have en-suite bathrooms. Be careful after showering as the drainage isn't what it should be and the floors not level, so water can be left lying in the bathroom for quite some time unless you get rid of it. Everything is of a decent size and there is space to lock your stuff away.
Common Spaces
As you enter the hostel, reception is on your right hand side. On your left is the lounge/dining area. This area is used for eating in as well as just chilling out. Wireless internet is supplied free of charge, so those with laptops can be frequently seen sitting in this area. There is a kitchen here but it is very small and most people eat out. To top that the hostel also has a small menu with a few meal choices and also a full breakfast.
There is a television here too but it is not that easy to hear when the place is full. There are also small sitting areas with a television on each floor that are quieter. In the main lounge there are two internet computers that you can use for a fee. For those of you leaving later in the day, luggage can be stored in a safe room at no extra charge. It is easy to meet new people here and most are backpackers doing or having done similar routes with lots of stories to tell.
Summary
The best part about staying here is the location. It is central for the city, the river, and many of the local highlights. The only real letdown is the lighting. Sometimes it isn't that easy to read a book there. The staff on the other hand are very helpful and will get you tickets sorted out for all kinds of travel needs.
