The Hostelz.com Review
Guilin Backstreet Youth Hostel is a member of the Hostelling International group and of a good standard that is generally consistent in all their hostels.
The Location
Although the hostel's own directions are not all that easy to follow, you don't need them. The hostel is relatively easy to find. It is only five minutes in a taxi from the train or bus station. Just ask for the Sheraton hotel -- it is right next door. It is a five-minute walk into the center and in a quiet spot, so ideally located.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are clean, but somewhat dark. All the rooms including the dorms have en-suite bathrooms. Be careful after showering as the drainage isn't what it should be and the floors not level, so water can be left lying in the bathroom for quite some time unless you get rid of it. Everything is of a decent size and there is space to lock your stuff away.
Common Spaces
As you enter the hostel, reception is on your right hand side. On your left is the lounge/dining area. This area is used for eating in as well as just chilling out. Wireless internet is supplied free of charge, so those with laptops can be frequently seen sitting in this area. There is a kitchen here but it is very small and most people eat out. To top that the hostel also has a small menu with a few meal choices and also a full breakfast.
There is a television here too but it is not that easy to hear when the place is full. There are also small sitting areas with a television on each floor that are quieter. In the main lounge there are two internet computers that you can use for a fee. For those of you leaving later in the day, luggage can be stored in a safe room at no extra charge. It is easy to meet new people here and most are backpackers doing or having done similar routes with lots of stories to tell.
Summary
The best part about staying here is the location. It is central for the city, the river, and many of the local highlights. The only real letdown is the lighting. Sometimes it isn't that easy to read a book there. The staff on the other hand are very helpful and will get you tickets sorted out for all kinds of travel needs.

The lady owner and staff ( mostly Students) all speak excellent English and have excellent local knowledge of just about everything. They are the most helpful staff we have ever come across - ( We are a middle aged couple and this was our first time to even enter a hostel!) The atmosphere and staff was better than most 3-4 star hotels which we have used to date. You can have dinner for two in the Sheraton across the road for $12.00 and save yourself $60 on accommodation. Super breakfast - Overall a real gem

This hostel is well located near to the Li River and the shopping street. It's also easy to wandering around the two lakes during the evening. A lot of unexpensive restaurant surround that area. The hostel provides relevant informations. You can book tours to the rice terraces and Yangshuo.

The staff at this hostel were incredible. They could not have done more to help us, even sitting on the internet with us for an hour and helping us find the trains we needed then writing the instructions out in Chinese to help us buy them at the station. They also offer local trips and can help with arranging other hostels and exploring the region.
The hostel was very clean, with nice communal facilities, comfy beds and good food. I highly recommend this hostel.

Decent sized room, friendly staff and electric blanket! Good info about tours and doing things in the area yourself. We didn't try the food there but it looked and smelt quite good and seemed decently priced.

Loved it! Loved the staff -- very helpful. Loved the atmosphere. The room was nice and spacious. The place has a washer and dryer which is very convenient. Great location -- close to pretty much everything. I'd go back there any day! — Lata , Indian (2010-09-24)
Glad we did not stay longer This is probably the worst place we have stayed in so far around China. We only had a base to sleep on which made sleeping very hard. Also needed a lot more cleaning done around the place. don't stay longer than 1 night only if you have to. — Anonymous , New Zealand (2010-05-14)

Good place to stay This is really clean and nice hostel with helpful staff and good location. (Located near the Li -river and a pleasant shopping street just behind a corner.) Dorm room I stayed in was nicely furnished and had big lockers. Bed was big and comfortable. Only minus was that it was horribly cold in the common room/internet room. — Illusion , Finland (2007-07-26)
