Albergue Ultreia is one of many others you'll find in Arzúa, but we feel like it manages somehow to stand out amongst the rest, with a cafe and restaurant on site that are open late at night and very early in the morning, comfortable rooms, and international and friendly atmosphere!
The Location
The location is great, the hostel is located a bit before the center of town, on the main road. It's right on the route of the Camino de Santiago. There are many restaurants nearby; pharmacy and supermarket are not too far away either. That being said, it's not the busiest area in town.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are a few large rooms, but the rooms are sort of divided into smaller cubicles, which give an illusion of privacy. Some of the beds are a bit more crowded than others, but overall the rooms are rather comfy. Clean sheets are provided, so are warm blankets. Towels are not included. In general, the rooms and communal areas feel cozy. Every bed has a power outlet and a reading light. There are some chairs around and the rooms have a lot of light. They could use some more hanging and storage space for all the backpacks.
Bathrooms and showers are kept spotless and are clean and dry even after the hostel is full. There is hand soap and fresh flowers, and the hot shower is such a treat.
Common Spaces
There is a small terrace in the back with a few tables; it's not a bad spot to watch a sunset when the day is done. There is also a dining area downstairs, which consists of a few tables, but is a bit "naked" and not that inviting in which to hang out. There is a tiny kitchen, which also doubles as a laundry room. There is a little stove and a fridge -- it's the bare minimum really, but that's still something! Mostly, they seem to encourage people to hang out at the cafe/restaurant. There is free Wi-Fi -- it works sometimes and in some areas, but not very reliably though.
Summary
It's a great and affordable hostel in a cute little town on the way to Santiago de Compostela. You'll meet plenty of people who are making their way there, and you'll probably have a good night's sleep!
