BEIJING RED LANTERN HOUSE MANAGEMENT
****************************************************************************************************************
...SEVERAL GENERATIONS LIVING UNDER THE SAME ROOF...
IT IS HARD TO PLEASE EVERYBODY BUT MORE THAN SEVEN HUNDRED GUESTS HAVE REVIEWED OUR HOSTEL!!!!!
The best and most charming in-hutong area Chinese Courtyard Hostel in the heart of downtown Beijing... 100% traditional and unique. This business is actually the first courtyard hostel open to travelers in Beijing, not newly built copies... We like to call it 'a slice of heaven everybody can afford'
See and experience the real core life of Beijing and stay in our Beijing traditional courtyard house within your budget. In the sense of home, Red lantern House is the closest while you are traveling.
Behind the busy streets of Central Beijing, Red Lantern House is quietly located in the best part of the largest preserved Hutong area of downtown Beijing, which used to be the homes of royal and noble families. The main building was built in the eighteenth century in a traditional courtyard house attached to the famous Zhengjue Temple. This hostel aims to give it’s guests an opportunity to experience Chinese architecture and culture with local style by actually staying with a local family who provides guests with affordable private and shared rooms of many types and styles.
To meet increasing demand of more and more international guests of different requirements, two more locations have been put into operation and the fourth is under renovation which will be fully ready for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Red Lantern House now consists of the Main Building, West Yard, East Yard and Temple Court. They are all located in the same neighborhood and main street. More choices of different accommodation are available to suit your needs and tastes. No matter you are traveling on your own, as couples, whole family, as a group, the old or young, and even disabled (we have a handicap-accessible location), you will surely enjoy yourselves comfortably in a new home.
This hostel actually is a restored heritage home but features all the comforts of a modern home with the ambiance and feeling of traditional Chinese decor.
We have excellent facilities and our services are of more than a hostel standard. The uniqueness of our hostel is never easily found even you are staying in a five star hotel. This is why within a very short period it has become widely accepted as one of the best hostels and gained excellent reputation among guests from all over the world.
The hostel is a family-owned facility offering all her guests a warm personal welcome and detailed services in a relaxed atmosphere of peace and tranquility where you won't feel isolated.
As one of our guests put: 'This is an excellent hostel with restaurant facilities and very good food from early morning till late at night. The location in a small Hutong gives it great atmosphere and the local family feel with several generations, a cat, a dog and a small happy baby all living under the same roof adds up to this being one of the greatest hostels you will ever stay at.'
Our staff is friendly and can speak English, always ready for help. All our lovely bedrooms are clean and of a fantastic value.
Again as another guests wrote in his review of our hostel: 'The character is outstanding and charming. When you first pull up you may be a bit confused because the area doesn't look the best. However, you soon realize this cute little place is in the center of a real old Beijing downtown. The rooms open up to a courtyard/restaurant where everyone goes to meet one another. It is filled with many travelers from all over the world (in their 20s and 30s, even 40s) that you get to know over beers and food.'

Clean rooms with a really nice courtyard. The staff were very helpful and the location was in a nice Hutong with lots of shops and restaurants nearby. I would go back here if I visited Beijing

The staff was very helpful and friendly. I showed up without enough money to check in, and they gave me my room key and let me settle in before I went off to find an ATM. The building is nice and traditional.

Traditional Hutong feeling, with a quiet courtyard and very nice rooms. The part of the hostel we stayed at is close to a metrostation, so it was easy to get around. The free breakfast you get if you pay for the five days stay when you arrive, is very tasty but a bit small. We stayed for 9 nights, and we really recommend this place!

Loved it!! Just recently came home from China and spent our last 4 days at the red lantern house (west yard). We first arrived and dropped our baggage off, checked in then told we were staying at the west yard about a 5 min walk away. We had our bags put on the back of a bike and walked down. Not sure what to expect but when we got there and got our en-suite rooms we were very wrapped. Our 2 boys had a separate room from us not very close but the safety we felt there was great. It was like a home away from home. The atmosphere was great and some of the staff spoke english and were very friendly and helpful. There was an indoor and outdoor courtyard which was very cosy. It was great too because many english speaking people were there from all over the country. The food they offer was also some of the best we tried in China. Try it you will love it!! — Deb Quilliam , Australia (2010-05-06)

Warmly recommended! This hostel is the most friendliest hostel I have ever been. It's charming and the rooms are very comfortable. I have been there several times and both yards are absolutely worth staying there! I would never choose another place in Beijing! — Sandra , Germany (2008-01-03)

I found my second home at Red Lantern House, Beijing Thanks to the wonderful, friendly, and helpful staff of Red Lantern House (especially William, Simon, Kane and Lisa), me and my wife preserve beautiful memories of Beijing. The place breathes with history and exotic atmosphere. The crew is constantly smiling and tries hard to make the guests feel well. The rooms are clean and warm, the food is excellent and trips (to Great Wall at Mutianyu or to a circus performance) match the description. That's why I did not hesitate to book the same place for my parents who just left for their Asian trip. if I'll ever find my way to Beijong again, Red Lantern House it will be! — Tomas Roller , Slovakia (2007-07-31)

One of the best hostels i've been in China. looks very nice and the people who work there are so cool. the area is not very bad. the hostel is located in a Hutong and right next is a cool shopping street. — cubert , german (2007-05-07)

Absolutely fantastic hostel. Has a beautifully courtyard with a restaurant. Rooms are clean and comfy. A bit hard to find as the dairy queen place mark that they use as a guide to find it is no longer there. If you want something chinesey without the dirt then this place is great. The food at the restaurant is cheep and very good. Even the coffee is not bad, which is amazing for a Chinese place. — James Evans , New Zealander (2007-04-26)

Fine place to stay right in the middle of old Beijing. Quite close to most of the major attractions (not a walking distance though). The staff is very helpful and friendly and speak some English. If something is not cleaned or changed at the time desired, one can just ask. Everything that a budget traveler might ever need in there in one place -- small trips, books, Internet. Yes, one must lose some of the comforts offered by the bigger hotels, but then why stay there in this case. Bigger hotels are the same everywhere, but Red Lantern House is quite unique. — Ilya (2007-03-13)
The location of the hostel is very bad. Honestly I think this hostel is over-charging, with the price they offer, you can actually get a two or three star hotel room at the Beijing town area. Never try to get the Great Wall tour or airport pick up service from them, you can easily get a much cheaper tour at other travel agency, and you can get taxi from the airport with a more reasonable price. Think twice before you commit yourself in any long term booking, I booked for seven days, but decided to leave on my second day. I try to check-out in the afternoon of my second day, but they refuse to return my money for the second night, not even half of it. Good luck if you want to stay in this hostel, I will not going back there anymore. — MC (2006-04-04)

Visited this hostel in april 2005 for 3 weeks
: a wonderful experience because its located in the traditional hutong. Because of the good atmosphere and the friendly English staff I can recommend this hostal to any backpacker
and will go myself to this hostal in 2006 again. — Rudi Klijnstra (2006-02-04)
We booked a double room with bathroom. When we arrived, it turned out that the room was not at the Red Lantern, but at the building next door. I've never seen a dirtier, more unclean room. When we stepped into the bathroom, our shoes stuck to the floor. The toilet had a "sanitized" banner on it, yet it was covered with sticky urine and hair. The bed was surrounded with gooey spots on the floor. We returned to the front desk to see what could be done about the problem, and we were told that there were no more double rooms, so we would have to stay in a four-bed dorm. The dorm room was located at the Red Lantern, and it was clean and the bed was comfortable. The courtyard was beautiful, and the common showers were fine, but overall the experience was disappointing and we chose to stay somewhere else for the remainder of our trip. The location is neither bad nor good; you'll have to take a bus or taxi to get to any of the usual Beijing attractions (other hostels are closer). The Red Lantern's directions for taking the bus from the airport to the hostel were very good and easy to follow. If you choose to stay here, be sure to stay at the Red Lantern and not at the place next door. — Anonymous (2005-06-07)
