This is quirky little gem of a place to stay -- quirky because it is off the beaten tourist track, in a working class residential area in northern Cairo, but a gem, in my opinion, for the same reason. If you want to get a feel for what Egypt is really like then stay here. The rooms are basic but big, the bathrooms are clean, and you and your belongings are completely safe. The hostel is two minutes from a metro station which will get you to central Cairo in thirty minutes. There are no western fast food outlets or the like nearby -- so you will be eating local food, or you can take up the offer of home-cooked food in the hostel at reasonable prices. The hostel is on the same site as a primary school so you get some noise in the mornings but not for long. You are more or less lodging with a family so it's a perfect place for lone travelers, and would be ideal for someone who is learning Arabic. A real bargain!
