The Hostelz.com Review
Bagatelle is a hostel, campground, and a hotel. It includes a restaurant, cafeteria, and an expensive supermarket. The hostel itself is located in a building to the right after entering the Bagatelle ground. The reception for the hostel is in the cafeteria which is straight ahead when you enter Bagatelle. The location is great -- situated on the Ile de Piot, just across the big bridge, it is away from traffic and noise.

The rooms are basic and do not expect them to be too clean. Dorms come with four to eight beds and private and double rooms are also available. Some of the dorms have a balcony with a nice view across the Rhone River towards the old part of Avignon. You will have to pay for sheets and a pillowcase. Don't place your backpack under the beds -- last time the space there saw cleaning was during the French Revolution. Big minus -- there are no lockers and you can't lock the doors of the rooms. The reception will keep your passport.

Bathrooms are on each floor and cleaned twice a day, but you will have a hard time having a nice, hot shower. Real hot water you'll only get in the bathrooms of the campground.

Breakfast is included in the price and consists of a hot drink, a cup of orange juice, a croissant and a bread roll, some jam and butter. The supermarket covers the basic needs for a high price, so do the shopping in town. The cafeteria offers small menus, pizza, pasta, and drinks and it is nice to sit on the terrace and have a glass of wine while meeting other travelers.

Wi-fi is offered for a charge. Time counts from the start, even if you log off. Internet doesn't work most of the time. Check in starts at 11 a.m. Reception/cafeteria is closed 2 to 5 p.m., as is the hostel, so you cannot get into the dorms at all.

Staff are friendly, but after being open so many years, they should have placed a proper reception sign at the entrance -- many backpacks walk around the campground looking for the check-in while the staff watches. Overall, it is a place to stay, and the owners know that people come to stay cheap, so why change?

The dormitories are very clean. So are the bathrooms. My overall experience was very good. Some nights were louder than others but that all depends on who else is staying in the hostel. The service at the reception was very good and all the workers and staff are very nice. The breakfasts are amazing! They were simple but you got a lot of food. The choices were very good as well. The only thing that bothered me was a banging door at night or in the morning. I'm not sure which one it was (I tested some of them close to my room), but it's there somewhere. But a great place to stay overall if you're young and on a tight budget.

I camped here in September 2004. The showers and toilets were very clean. I met several young people who were staying in the hostel. They all thought the hostel facilities were good. It has a very friendly staff with several native English speakers. You can buy your beers in the local supermarket and sit outside the camp bar and chat. The best bit is that it's so close to the town you can see La Pont Sur Avignon from camp. A must is a visit to Pont Du Guard Roman Aquaduct, about 15 miles south.

Avignon is a fun city, one of the best in France (especially during the theater festival in July). I had great time there. The hostel is in a wonderful location and it is fun to sit outside by the lake. It has a weird smell, but it wasn't dirty and it was cheap. The hostel lacks locks, lockers and a common room.

It sucked. The food was as bad as hell!!! Really disgusting. The showers were really dirty. It was not really cheap if you ask me. You have to pay 9 euros extra for food that was not eatable. If you pay some euros more you can eat very well in a restaurant in town. It's better to pay some extra euros and have a cheap hotel. The owners were not friendly at all.

Avignon is a very small fortified city in the south of france. Hostel Bagatelle operates behind a camp ground of the same name, run by the same people however all amenities etc are kept completely separate and the hostel operates as its own entity. The dorm rooms are very small and the owners have crammed in as many bunk beds as they can offering absolutely no space to move. It is even difficult to find a suitable place for your bags, considering there are 8 people in the room. Dorms are also gender segregated and couple travelling together may find is very difficult to get a room together. There is also absolutely zero security offered at the hostel and NO doors lock. Also of note is the fact that Avignon regularly floods, so take note of evacuation charts posted up everywhere (although it is unlikely that the hostel would be effected in these cases). The hostel is located walking distance into the town and all major attractions. It also offers spectacular views of the Papal Palace and Pont d'Avignon. There is a significant lock out and an early checkout time.

It's true that this place is A BIT dirty, but I liked it, however. It is a campsite as well as a hostel, so a lot of services are provided, and it is REALLY CHEAP and close to the main attractions in Avignon. You can even go swim in the pool for free (where the women are almost all topless, strange but true). I really enjoyed my moments here.

The hostel was dirty and smelled bad. There were dirty sheets on the beds, and there were no locks on the doors or lockers. It was cheap, though.
