Makarov Hostel is the closest we've seen to a real hostel in town so far, and it looked very promising before we arrived. The location is great and the rooms are fancy, but their customer service needs a lot of work if they hope to provide a nice, carefree experience for guests.

The Location

The location is fantastic -- the hostel is located right by the banks of the Moscow River in the very heart of town. Within a short walking distance, you can reach the famous Red Square, the Kremlin, famous parks and museums, and there are a few metro stations that will take you everywhere else. The location is really superb.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are great, and they're the only thing in the hostel that deserves an A. The beds are well built and comfortable and have all the little extra gadgets that make them extra cosy. There is a curtain, a shelf, power outlets, and reading lamps. What more can we ask for? There are some hangers for clothes and there are lockers under the beds for valuables (you get the keys from reception). Large backpacks or suitcases will not fit, though, and then they're kind of in the way. There are a couple of toilets on each floor; they're usually wet and not very clean, but the only showers seem to be in the basement, which is kind of a hassle to make such a long journey just for a shower. Also, bring your own towel, as these are not provided. As opposed to the nice rooms, the showers and toilets are old and at times dysfunctional and are always dirty and usually run out of toilet paper in the evenings/early mornings.

Common Spaces

For a relatively big hostel like this one, we expect more common spaces. There are only a few seats in reception, while there is always a line and you sometimes end up waiting as much as an hour just to check in. There is a large kitchen and dining area in the basement, but it's not large enough. They seem to have crammed it with seats, so it's very crowded, but it's also full most of the time, and again it isn't really enough when the hostel is full. The kitchen is equipped with the essentials, but is mostly disorganized. It's hard to find stuff, and unfortunately you don't get a proper introduction/orientation at check in. They have free Wi-Fi, but it's a bit tricky to connect to if you don't use social networks, so we find that a bit tedious as well. If you don't fancy walking out the door, they have a sort of a mini-market in reception and you can get quite a variety of groceries right here.

Summary

We think this place has a lot of potential -- hopefully they will work on their customer service and improve some of their facilities, and then we're sure people will have a much better experience!

Location

Hostel is located next to the subway, which is especially important for a city like Moscow. It's no news that the subway in the city is the main form of transport in Moscow and this is no exception. Just a five minute walk from the hostel Moscow metro station Tretyakovskaya and Novokuznetskaya station, from which you can quickly reach any part of the city. Transport interchange and proximity to the subway makes the stay in Moscow a convenient, enjoyable and interesting. Thanks to this you can visit many interesting places without spending a lot of money on travel.
