The Hostelz.com Review
The hostel is easy to get to from any of the Basel railway stations but is closest to Basel SBB (the Swiss station) and Basel SNCF (the French station). It is about 15 minutes walk from Basel SBB although it is possible to take tram 16 from Unterfuhrung SBB (near the station) to Tellplatz and change for tram 15 to Bruderholzstrasse, right next to the hostel. Once there, the hostel is a little hidden, in an internal courtyard.

Guests at the hostel receive a Mobility Pass which allows free use of the Basel public transport system (trams and buses) – which is a useful free added extra. The area around the hostel is a little like a ghost town but with the mobility pass it is easy to get a tram to the city centre bars and restaurants.

Check in staff are friendly and keen to show you around the facilities. The dorms are large and have lockers although a CHF20/€20 deposit is required for the key. The bedding was warm and each bed has a small light which is useful. There is no lockout or curfew but the checkin hours are a little restrictive 8am to 1pm and 5pm to 12pm. The dorms have 4 bunk beds but since they overlook an internal courtyard, it can be quite noisy due to enthusiasts practicing their drums and saxophones very late at night.

The showers were warm and the bathrooms, like the rest of the hostel were kept very clean. There is a large kitchen with the usual appliances – but one thing to note is that Swiss powerplugs have the usual 2 prongs but a special hexagonal shape prevents all non-Swiss European appliances from being plugged in and used.

5 I was very impressed with this place. Clean and central, with everything you need. Finding it was a tad difficult, as it's quite hidden -- keep walking down the alley past the restaurant and you'll find it. The Basel Mobility Card was a definite bonus, as it allows you to explore the city for nothing! They also offered half-price Indian takeaways when I was there (Aug. '06). But the thing that stood out most about this place was the brilliant staff -- they were so keen to help, offering to book more hostels for you, and advising you on the best ones. Although I was tempted to give this place four stars because the atmosphere was a bit dull (yet I stayed only one night in a relatively quiet period), it gets five stars for the excellent staff. Don't go anywhere else in Basel!

4 Good value! The hostel is near the SBB railway station and fifteen minutes by foot to the old town. There are clean shared toilettes and showers. There is also a good kitchen for guests.
