HI - Lappeenranta - Huhtiniemi Hostel cannot be described as anything other than superb value for an utterly Scandinavian budget accommodation.
The Location
The hostel is located as part of a campsite about two kilometers from Lappeenranta town centre and just under three kilometers from Lappeenranta train station. It is just outside the town but has a superb location in a lovely wooded area. There is ample parking and a local bus that runs by the train station stops nearby. The dormitory accommodation is offered in the larger of the quaint wooden cabins at the campsite (smaller private cabins sleep two people). Each dormitory sleeps four guests, though there is little space for anything other then the bunk beds, a picnic table by the window, and a small fridge. There is a small heater against one wall, which is a real help in autumn when it gets quite chilly. The hostel is only open for business from the spring through to the autumn. It would be far to cold to stay in these thin-walled cabins in the Finnish winter.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Accommodation is fairly secure. The dorm cabins have locks and the area -- indeed the country as a whole -- does not have a great crime rate. The interior of the cabin is very well maintained. Beds are comfortable and blankets are provided. Bathrooms are the shared toilet and shower blocks in use for the whole campsite and are of good standard though varying cleanliness, depending on what time of the day you visit them.
Common Spaces
The hostel also offers kitchen facilities, although these are completely lacking in kitchen utensils and crockery. They are very clean, but this may simply be due to the fact that people cannot cook in them without any utensils or crockery. The hostel's main common area is the surrounding natural area that most guests have come to enjoy. Huhtiniemi is mainly frequented by Finnish families. It is generally a quiet and safe area to stay, and the only disturbance you might get is from the noise of children playing outside or from the annoying mosquitoes that live in the woods the summer.
Summary
While this hostel's facilities may not always be perfect, the place has a definite draw to it. This is largely influenced by the novelty factor of sleeping in a wooden cabin and the delight of its location amongst the trees. Yet it cannot be overlooked that it also succeeds in its basic objective of providing comfortable, warm beds at rock bottom prices in a country where such a thing is relatively rare.
