Hotel Schanzenstern is a hotel and hostel. It's located very close to Sternschanze S/U-bahn station, which is only a few stops from Hamburg's main intercity railway station. It is run by an eco-friendly cooperative who tend to stick to their rules obediently. Early check in means leaving bags in the office until the afternoon, but you get a key to several doors allowing you entry after hours (for €10 deposit).
Breakfast is available for an extra €6 in the adjoining café. The food is ok, but there is a huge selection of nice breakfast/food places in the neighbourhood. The cafe also becomes a bar in the evening, specialising in organic food (including organic beers).
The rooms are small with an en-suite bathroom, which is a nice plus. And unlike many hostels, the beds aren't bunk beds. There is plenty of space, although given its location, it is more of a party hostel with people coming back from clubs late into the morning.
The showers have decent water pressure and the temperature is warm - and being ensuite means avoiding the early morning crush in the showers down the corridor.
