Sunrise Backpackers is an absolute steal! It's in the centre of town, very clean, and really cheap. There are private rooms, dorms and indoor camping; there's a restaurant and lots of activities can be organised through the hostel.
The Location
Sunrise Backpackers is on the main road of Puerto Viejo. From the bus stop walk down the road away from the beach and take the first left and it's right there. The shops, restaurants, bars, and beach are all only a couple of minutes walk away. Being on the main road means that you can sometimes hear the traffic so it's a bit noisy. The upstairs restaurant also plays music and has karaoke some nights, which also means that it's sometimes not easy to get to sleep!
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms were really really nice (especially if you consider the price). The private rooms are downstairs and have shelves and bedside tables but no hooks. The dorm is upstairs and is spacious and with no bunk beds (which is a nice change). The indoor camping area is also upstairs and you can either bring your own or use one of their tents. The rooms are clean, light, and spacious. The bathrooms are clean but a little dark. Apparently there is hot water but it doesn't seem to work all the time.
Common Spaces
There aren't really any common spaces in the hostel and not much of a community atmosphere. At the entrance there are a couple of places to chill and watch the world go by and there is a restaurant upstairs but most people head to the bars in town. There is internet access upstairs (not included) and free coffee and kitchen access. Bikes are available for rent as well as surfboards and snorkel gear and they can organise a number of tours and trips for you, including diving.
Summary
Sunrise Backpackers is unbelievably clean and well looked after when you consider the price and is a very comfortable place to stay. It doesn't have much of an atmosphere but it's perfectly situated and has a lot to offer.
