| Location | •For action beyond the castle walls, hire a bicycle and discover greater Heemskerk. The vast North Holland Dune Reserve starts 3 km from the hostel. Reach the beach through the dunes or go by car along the little seaside towns of Wijk aan Zee, Bakkum, Castricum or Egmond aan Zee. Heemskerk is close to Alkmaar, Haarlem and Amsterdam. Don't forget the Zwarte Markt bazaar in Beverwijk, the IJmuiden fishing harbour, the Zaanse Schans windmills and the Keukenhof flower gardens! • Public transport • Take the train to Beverwijk station. Then take bus 74. Get off at the Jan van Kuikweg stop, which is 200 m from the hostel. You can also take a special ‘train taxi' for a fixed price or regular taxi from Beverwijk station. Heemskerk station is a 20-minute walk from the hostel. There is no bus or train taxi service from Heemskerk station. |

Nice building squandered by inept staff and managers Upon arriving at the hostel I was excited for a nice stay. But, I was soon rewarded with a very unrelaxing atmosphere, sterile decorations, and rooms packed with noisy kids. There is no kitchen to cook in (I thought kitchens were standard in hostels), no comfortable places to relax, and not a whole lot to do. Somehow, stayokay managed to take a beautiful building with a lot of potential for a unique hosteling experience and turn it into an institutionalized, uncomfortable, merely functional stay. — Faron , USA (2009-10-13)
