Hostelz.com's Review
Grand Hostel Berlin, this brand spanking new hostel, is just beautiful. It opened in July 2009, built in a renovated historic building. The beauty of wooden staircases and doors; tastefully placed gilded grates; gigantic windows; high, moulded ceilings; and many other touches reminiscent of a bygone era combine gracefully with clean, modern fittings where it matters most. The feel and comfort level are much more on par with a boutique hotel, but the prices keep it firmly within a backpacker's budget, and the common areas and friendly staff provide a more social atmosphere than one might find in a hotel.

The Location

The hostel is located in Kreuzberg, right near the canal -- not to worry, the neighborhood is very nice and safe and (although it may not feel like it at first) it is very close to great food, entertainment, and nightlife options, as well as tourist attractions like Checkpoint Charlie. The nearby Mehringdamm and Bergmannstrasse are particularly great places to find restaurants, bars, clubs, and an overall cool vibe. The hostel does face a busy street and an U-bahn track, however, and it can be very loud in the rooms if you open the windows.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are several types of rooms available, including many sizes of private rooms. Most of the dorms are either four or five beds, and there are no bunk beds anywhere in this hostel. Each gleaming white bed is fitted with freshly washed cozy duvet and pillow, an ottoman that can be used as a bedside table or chair, and electrical outlets. Each person also gets a personal full length closet, complete with a top shelf and hangers (that can even come off the rack!), and locks are available at reception for a deposit, which is returned in full upon checkout. There is usually at least one table and chair in the room. The space between the beds and the huge amount of space in the rooms in general makes such a wonderful change from the usual cramped hostel quarters.

Some of the dorms have ensuite bathrooms with sink, toilet, large mirror, and shelf, as well as shower and bathtub. Otherwise, the hall showers and toilets are very clean, with good water pressure and hot water.

Access to each floor as well as to each room is controlled by personal pin codes, which you are given upon check in. It feels very secure and is nice to not have to carry around keys or cards, but don't forget your code!

Common Spaces

There is a computer room and lounge on the ground floor with free internet computers for guest use (free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the building). Unfortunately this is also the designated smoking room, so if you're not a smoker it may get a little unpleasant. This room also doubles as a breakfast room (no smoking allowed during breakfast), and has tables and chairs set up for either eating or hanging out. The cafe area and lobby are also both used for eating, but it is possible to sit and socialize in these areas. An all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet is available each morning for an extra fee -- it's not cheap, but the spread is usually very generous and diverse, and definitely worth it if you're hungry! The hostel also offers other meals throughout the day and night, and there is a pitcher of water and glasses at reception (a rare find in Germany).

Summary

A breath of fresh air in the hostel world, Grand Hostel provides an almost luxurious feel at standard hostel prices. It's definitely not a party hostel, but it is friendly and comfortable and one-of-a-kind in the quality and amount of space it provides its guests. It is highly recommended for a pleasant and relaxing base to explore Berlin. If they keep their prices this low, it is most certainly one of the best deals in the city!

4   Recommendable nice restored old building. good comfort for reasonable price. international guests, friendly welcome and support. perfect located for exploring Carnival of Cultures and Berlin X-berg. floor and room door closing is too noisy. because of U-Bahn railway and road in front I'll next time prefer a room at rear side. breakfast at "Grand Ma's" is surpassing. I was offered to book the breakfast in advance of my arrival at a fantastic price. enjoy!  , age 34, Mannheim ()
