The Hostelz.com Review
About fifteen minutes' walk from Aveiro train station in a quieter area of town, Binibag Guesthouse is an extremely homey hostel with excellent customer service. We visited in the off-peak season, thus it was a bit quiet, but can imagine that during the summer seasons, the many common spaces will make it a very social place to visit.
The Location
A stone's throw away from the neighbourhood club, it is tucked away in one of the canals, and fifteen minutes' walk or five minutes by taxi from the Aveiro train station. Walking in to town centre is effortlessly easy, as Aveiro is a small and flat town, but there are many local restaurants, and cafes in between. A handy mini market is on the opposite street, and within a stone's throw away is a big park that leads towards the grounds of the prestigious Aveiro University.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are simple but laid out practically, with each named after and coloured with a dash of vibrancy. Each bed is given a wardrobe locker with lock supplied. The bathrooms are more akin to those you get in a private, homey setting, but are shared within many rooms.
Common Spaces
Binibag really feels more like being invited in to someone's home. Something about the kitchen, dining, and courtyard area just makes it seem like a lived in home rather than a hostel, and it's charmingly easy to feel at ease. The house is peppered with graphic design posters, which we enjoyed immensely, but the social spaces (there are two sitting rooms downstairs, a lounge upstairs, a balcony, and a courtyard) is where the most credit must be given -- it's peppered with interesting furniture, and a multitude of comfy chairs for people to hang around in and just chat.
Summary
We were extremely happy with the facilities and customer service in the hostel and would recommend it to anyone looking to travel to Aveiro. During the summer, they hold group activities like kayaking and the many homey social spaces in the hostel would make it an interesting place to meet new people and get to know the Venice of Portugal.
