The Hostelz.com Review
For those looking for an out-of-town, rustic, nature-type of accommodation and experience, Rio Savane Backpackers is the place.

It is situated thirty-four kilometers northeast from Beira, and best way to get there is by 4x4. There is local transport going that way, but it's normally very crowded, and at times it's at the back of a pickup truck. There are no signs for this place and it's actually easy to find once you know which turn off to take from the main road. You then simply follow the dirt road until it dead ends. What make this place extra special is that the only way you get to it is by boat (or the dhow). Sometimes you can wait quite a while for one to come, but the wait is all worth it.

There are quite a few accommodation options to choose from. Two- to four-bed dorms -- or "baraccas" as they are called locally -- is just a little brink room, with grass roof and cement floor. Each baracca is on its own site and not joined at all together. All window opening are gauzed against mosquitoes and other bugs. They do have electricity and lights, but only until 9 p.m. at night. These houses do not have beds, but you can rent mattresses and linen at a very reasonable rate.

The houses are not en-suite but there are ablution blocks nearby. There are at least four ablution blocks, and these are basic but clean. The showers are cold, but sometimes at night they have a local way of making hot water for showers. Ask at the restaurant about this.

There are also camping spots, and they provide already pitched tents. Then they have two "old" fully furnished houses, and two very nice "new" houses. The whole camping and accommodation site is under palm trees. There is electricity in the evening but only until 9 p.m. Most camp sites and small dorms have a BBQ facility, so you can do your own food, but they do not have a common kitchen.

There is a restaurant on site that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the specialty is, of course, seafood. Celso, the hostel owner, is very helpful with all kinds of requests. This place has such a beach feel to it, with all the sea sand and coconut trees. Depending on what time of the year you go, it can either be quiet or very lively.
