Quartu Sant’Elena is the third biggest city in Sardinia, sitting comfortably between the Campidano plains and the Sette Fratelli mountain range. The Italian town is a natural oasis, famous for beaches, salt lakes and its colonies of pink flamingos, who nest on the pond of Molentargius, and that travellers come from all over the world to visit.

In fact the coastline is a jaw dropping view, definately not one you would want to miss were you to travel to Quartu Sant’Elena. You will find a selection of beaches to choose from - fine, sandy, or pebbly, the city has it all. The sea scapes are breathtaking and are often referred to as looking painted, as it varies in shades and hues across the horizon.

This typically Italian coastal town can work for any visitor. Hostels vary in price, but all offer comfortable, classy dormitory rooms that save you the cost of paying more for a resort or expensive hotel room. Staying at one of the cities many hostels ensures not only safety for a budget conscious traveller, but also the freedom to move around during your visit and see what wonderful things Quartu Sant’Elena has to offer.

Besides the panorama of the coast, the city is famous for the ancient basilica, Sant’Elena Imperatrice, which houses beautiful religious items and frescos that are brought out during a procession each year. The town is a rural one, even now, so its quaint country buildings and traditions give you a true sense of its deep Italian heritage.

Although it may seem rustic, the cuisine of Sardinia still reigns. Visit from June to October for the sunnier months, although it may be busier, and stay to try what the region is famous for - wine, bread, and cakes. Quartu Sant’Elena itself is enough to make your mouth water.
