Get to know Bergamo (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Bergamo.

Bergamo is a town in the Lombardy region of Italy, roughly 40 km from Milan. There are about 120,000 inhabitants in the town and surrounding area. Bergamo is very easily accessible by public transport so you shouldn't have any trouble reaching town and getting to your Bergamo hostel. The town has a its own train and bus station with departures to many Italians cities. There is also an international airport nearby.

Città Alta is the upper part of the town and one of the main attractions of the area. This medieval part of town was built in the 17th century. It is contained in a high venetian wall and is all pedestrianised. There are several interesting buildings and churches such as the Cittadella, Pellazza della Ragione, and the Basillica di Santa Maria Maggiore. This area of the city is most commonly accessed by funicular train from Città Bassa. There are also local buses which go as far as the main car park area. There are many excellent viewing areas in Città Alta. There is no shortage of places to eat in Città Alta. In fact, this area is very popular with locals. There are many traditional Italian style restaurants as well as other types of cuisines. Prices range from very affordable to very expensive. It all depends on where you chose. Also, it is possible to reach the small village San Vigilio, which can be accessed by foot or by catching another funicular train from Città Alta. This area offers excellent viewpoints as well some interesting castle ruins.

Città Bassa or the lower city refers to the main city centre area. This bustling part of the city is modern for the most part. There are many restaurants, bars and nightclubs to chose from as well as a large selection of Gellateries which sell a wide range of delightful homemade ice-creams.

Bergamo is located at the foot of the Alps. As a result, there are many nature parks with hiking trails, mountain climbing and white water rafting and other activities located a small drive away from the city.

Your choices for Bergamo hostels are limited but you do have some good options which offer both private and dorm style accommodation.
