Tata, Hungary, is situated in the north of Hungary, in the county of Komárom-Esztergom. With its proximity to the capital, many historic sights and its quaint location on Lake Öreg, it is definitely a worthwhile destination for a day trip from Budapest.

With a history that goes back more than fifty thousand years, Tata has a lot to offer; it was inhabited in the Roman times, and many ruins remain from this era that can still be visited today. In the fourteenth century, a Renaissance castle was built here, which served an important function during the Ottoman attacks and has been nicely restored for the public. However, the most prominent sight of the town is Eszterházy Palace, which offers rooms furnished according to the period and is open to visitors during weekends.

Moreover, Tata is a nice destination if you are looking for a place to enjoy the Hungarian flora and fauna and do some easy hikes. Located in the valley between the Gerecse and Vértes Mountains, it can be an ideal base for excursions around the area. The town itself offers some outdoor activities mostly connected to the lakes, including fishing and a golf course on the lake. The Botanic Garden and the Fenyes Education Trail are worth a visit as well.

The best way to get to Tata is by using your own vehicle. The M1 motorway that connects Budapest and Vienna goes right through the town, so it can be an ideal stop between the two capitals. However, there are frequent trains running on the route as well.
