We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Mount Isa.

Mount Isa, in the Outback of Australia, Queensland, is known as the “Oasis of the Outback” and the landscape around is marked by the Selwyn Ranges on the banks of the Leichhardt River. It isn't a busy tourist place, but you can get a hostel here, and you will start to feel how is it to live in the interior of this country, in the authentic Outback. After arriving here, you will feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, but its beauty will make it worthwhile.

This city is very important economically; it houses one of the biggest mines in the world, Mount Isa Mine. The Lechhardt River divides the mine from the rest of the city. Once here, the treks and walks are really worth it, but you cannot miss the museum, Outback at Isa, detailing all the history about the pioneering "outbackers." Once in the city, don't forget to head for the City Lookout, the best place to get amazing views from the city and the surroundings.

Mout Isa is easily accessed by bus, as it is on the way from Queensland's east coast and the Northern Territory. So, if you are coming from the east coast and heading to Alice Springs or Darwin, you will pass by Mount Isa. There are daily buses from the main cities, Cairns (via Townsville), Alice Springs, and Darwin (via Tennant Creek). By car, it's a long drive from almost everywhere, but that is something you will get used if you are driving a car in the Outback. There is also the possibility of using the train.

There are a few hostels in Mount Isa; they are good places to settle while exploring the surrounds, and here you will find all the facilities you need for your travel.
