San Antonio de Areco, Argentina, is a town around one hundred fifteen kilometers northwest from Buenos Aires. It is an excellent destination for tourists who want to get an impression of what rural life in Argentina used to be like; for many locals and tourists, the small traditional town is like traveling back in time. The history of the town, which has been declared a Town of Historic National Interest by the Argentinian government, dates back to the eighteenth century.

If you like culture and traditions, try the rural town Museo Gauchesco Ricardo Güiraldes, which gives you a glimpse of the traditional Argentinian spirit. The museum was founded in the mid-twentieth century, and named after the writer of the famous novel "Don Segundo Sombra." Typical gaucho items of clothing, silverware, and period books -- including the complete collection of texts by Güiraldes -- are on display. The pink, river-spanning bridge Ponte San Antonio De Areco was built in the mid-nineteenth century, and apparently inspired the writer Güiraldes. For this reason, this structure was also mentioned in a text section of his famous novel. It is said that in the early days, a fee was charged for all the pedestrians who wanted to cross.
