Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Dead Sea

Dead Sea, Israel, is one of the world's most famous sites. Although it technically marks the border between Palestine and Jordan, it is often referred to as Israeli territory.

Although the United Nations considers Palestine an independent nation and the most touristy places on the Dead Sea are located in Palestine, it is Israel that dominates the western shores of the Dead Sea. All the resorts and the territory are regulated by Israel. There are only resorts on the Dead Sea; your choices for hostels in Dead Sea, Israel, or other budget accommodation will be hard to come by here. Your best bet to stay at a hostel is in the city of Jericho, which at this writing has a handful of hostels. From the northern part of the shore of the Dead Sea, it will take about fifteen minutes to reach Jericho's city centre.

The main attraction is obviously swimming, or rather floating, in the salty lake. According to many, a visit to the Dead Sea is not complete without having your picture taken while floating on the water or reading a newspaper while doing so.

Apart from a small and hard-to-get-to area at the northern part, all beaches are privatized, so you will need to pay an entrance fee to get close to the sea. Many of these privatized properties come with pools, restaurants, a beach bar, and beds. Open showers are also available on the beds, which you will definitely want to use after touching the water.

The Dead Sea area is not only about the lake itself. Ein Gedi is a great place for small hikes, where you can enjoy the canyon, waterfalls, and springs. Masada, eighteen kilometers from Eind Gedi, is also worth visiting; on the mountain-top fortress, you can enjoy a magical sunrise or sunset.

Although the Dead Sea area can be seen within one day, you may want to book two, three, or even more nights here to make sure you have enough time to visit the Dead Sea area as well as the city of Jericho, which should not be skipped when in the region. If you prefer to book a hostel and use that as a base to visit all the places of interest in Palestine from there, it is even possible to make a day trip from a Jerusalem hostel to the Dead Sea.
