Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Belize

Belize. It's the only English speaking country in Central America and is known for is spectacular diving. Most people coming to Belize will spend some time out in the Caye's diving the incredible Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest living reef in the world and still growing. Caye Caulker is the most popular of the islands and it is from here you can organize a dive trip out to the famous Blue Hole, or if diving is not your thing they also do snorkeling trips where you can see sting rays and sharks. There are many hostels on the island that you can stay at, the island is small and you should be able to find everything you need within walking distance of the hostel. Caye Caulker is also quite popular with its nightlife.

To get here to Caye Caulker or to anywhere throughout Belize you need to go through Belize City. Belize City has hostels, but has a reputation for being on the dangerous side, so it is best not to spend too much time there if you can avoid it. If you head east from here you will make your way through Belmopan over to San Ignacio. San Ignacio has some stunning river scenery along which they start the "Ruta de Maya" kayak race yearly towards Belize City. The ATM caves here are also amazing to visit and are a great archaeological insight into how the Mayan's used these caves and lived in them. They have skeletons including the crystal maiden and a whole range of broken clay pots throughout the cave that are found in the places where they were left. From San Ignacio, you can catch a bus to the border of Guatemala.

Up north you can go through the town of Orange Walk. It has a very chilled out vibe with some cool cafes. It also gives you access to some great hiking in the area. It is on its way north up to the border at Chetumal where you can cross into Mexico.

Wherever it is you choose to go to in Belize, you will find friendly people and beautiful nature. You should take at least a week to two to get through it properly. Hostels are very sparse outside of the Cayes and the major cities. Prices will vary for the hostels and are still very affordable even though Belize is one of the more expensive countries in the region.
