Great place! The staff is very friendly and welcoming, the food is excellent, and the dorms don't feel half as big as they are. The coral reef extremely stunning, I got so sunburned that even my doctor said he hadn't seen anything like that before. Just go there and enjoy a little piece of paradise!
We stayed at Manta Ray for five days/four nights and loved every minute of it. We stayed in the private jungle bure which I would definitely recommend over the dorms. The bure was right on the beach and faced out to the beautiful blue and green lagoon. The hammocks in front of the bure were worth spending a few leisurely hours in! The bure was quite spacious and had a great en-suite (with lots of warm water). Fellow travelers confirmed that this is one of the best budget resorts in the Yasawa Islands. The food is excellent though the drink prices are a little high (but it's no different from everywhere else in Fiji). We especially enjoyed the trip to the local Soso village where most of the staff come from. It's a great place to do some reasonably priced shopping for handicrafts and jewelry and the people are very friendly and not in the least bit pushy. The owners are Australian but the staff that you have regular contact with are all Fijian and they are very warm and friendly. The swimming and snorkeling are great however I do agree that the beach is a little stony. It definitely won't stop me from going back again -- it's truly a beautiful piece of paradise!
We stayed at Manta Ray for four nights on a quick stop-over on our way to New Zealand. Overall, we had a great experience. The staff were helpful and although, I think that the owners/managers were Australian, it was staffed by locals from a nearby island. They were very nice and liked to talk with you. We had one of the nice jungle bures with en-suite (and warm showers). It was very nice as it was right on the beach. The snorkeling is good right offshore and the kayaks are free to take when you please. It is on a nice island with nothing else besides the resort and you can easily walk around the island at low tide. The food was good, but often was the same thing repeated. I would recommend this place as a great getaway if you are on a budget.
I only stayed one night, and didn't get to go snorkeling. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, with double doors opening onto a deck that overlooked the bay. Amenities very clean, but the showers were cold. Meals were excellent.
Worst place to stay ever. Never again -- I can only hope that peole read this and avoid Mantaray Resort. The beach was horrible and stony, we couldn't even get in the sea. The staff are all english -- nothing against english people but we wanted some culture! Overpriced and overrated. Food was awful. Drink was expensive and the happy hour gave 50 cent of beer -- what a joke. Please do yourself a favour and don't go here.
I visited Manta Ray Island Resort in early 2005 when you could still smell the paint and freshness of the wooden paradise dorm as it was pretty new. I'm sure things haven't changed much since because ultimately this place was amazing. Beautiful beach, crystal clear clean waters, fantastic food, friendly staff, great atmosphere, and just generally a wonderful haven from the stresses of daily life. You even get warm showers, and the spiders stay hidden away in the trees. If you want Paradise, head to Manta Ray Island Resort.
