Despite of having booked my stay a month in advance the private room was gone when I arrived at Gdansk after a long trip. The only thing I was offered was a bed in a huge dorm, with hardly any space for luggage, and a generous discount of 1GBP from the normal price of the bed in the dorm. The dorm itself was on the ground floor and the window was wide opened all night, so the security was next to none, and the dorm was loud at night thanks to noisy drunkards outside and locals testing subwoofers in their cars. Not to mention lack of toilet paper and soap in the "en suite" toilet in the dorm. I tried to speak to the owner but nobody of the staff was willing to give me his contact details or to tell times when he is around. I left my email address there and asked to be contacted by the owner when he finally appears but it did not happen. I will never stay there again.
Good for the price
The single room was very small, on the top floor with the slanted ceiling serving as a wall, so you could not stand up in the room. But considering the price it was worth it. Location is also superb.
I have traveled throughout all of the major cities in Poland over the last two weeks and by far this has been the worst hostel. They claim to have free internet but you must first wait for the staff to get off the computer! One staff lady was even rude to a patron who simply asked if she would be off soon. She stared at him and flatly said two minutes! I left about five minutes after that and the poor gentlemen was still waiting for the staff member to get off the computer! Their laundry is 20 a load which may be normal but all the other hostels I went to were cheaper, free laundry, and much more accommodating. They are extremely overpriced for what they are offering here. One good thing is they were a clean hostel and a decent location. However I would not come here again.
Poor quality -- overpriced
really well positioned hostel however that's about the only redeeming feature. really overpriced, dingy rooms, moody unhelpful staff -- you get the sense this is a cash cow for some absent owner squeezing guests for all their worth. the worst place we stayed in four towns in Poland.
Very poor condition and unfriendly welcome
I can only advise you not to check in in przy targu rybnym hostel! We booked well in advance and got a confirmation for a three-bed room via email. When we arrived it turned out that there were only beds left in a big dorm. No excuse and no politeness at all from the staff! It was incredible. Besides this the hostel looks very shabby (carpet)! We decided to spend a bit more money and went elsewhere where we found much better conditions.
We were at the hostel 24 and 25 febr. It was very good and there were very friendly people.
We arrived at this hostel after having made a booking through a hostel agency over the internet. We had paid a deposit and despite this Przy Targu Rybnym had failed to hold a room for us. They confirmed that they had received the reservation when we made it (almost two months in advance), but that they had let the room to someone else despite the deposit we paid (and we did not even arrive any later than expected -- our train was on time!). Therefore we had to spend time walking around with our backpacks to find another place to stay -- and because everywhere was booked we had to pay much more for a hotel than we would normally have paid for accommodation. They also refused to refund our deposit. I would definitely not recommend booking with this hostel -- the booking is worthless -- they do not respect it.
Stayed here in late May of 2005. A friend and I arrived with two other random travelers, late in the evening, without reservations. The staff were gracious although communication was thin. This was the smallest hostel I have ever stayed in and it made for an interesting, intimate setting that more resembled a college dorm than a hotel. It might have been a little bit crowded but it was clean and the bathrooms were fantastic. Breakfast was the usual but there was a fully automated espresso maker that worked great once a native german speaker took the controls. A bizarre rainstorm the second afternoon put everybody in an interesting mood and all the guests returned early with food and beer and booze. About twenty of us (the whole place) gathered in the main lobby and partied our asses off into the wee hours of the morning. The staff came in and cooked up complimentary pierogies and brought a liter of spiced vodka for the occasion. By far the best hostel experience I've ever had.
