Hostal Merida 63 Reviews

Hostal Merida 63 is really grim; just pay the extra couple of dollars and stay somewhere else.

The Location

The location of this hostel is the only good thing about it; it's literally the only thing. It is located around a ten-minute walk from the ADO bus station in town, and around four blocks from the main square of Mérida as well as the cathedral and lots of shops and restaurants. You will easily find it on your way, the outside is bright yellow with blue doors. It's quite a weird setup -- you do not receive a key, you simply knock on the door and the man (possibly the owner?) gets up from bed, which is conveniently located in the living room area and lets you in.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two dorm rooms -- a four-bed female and a six-bed male. The bed itself is ok, but the room is filthy, and during our stay one of the top bunks was covered in black rubbish bags, contents unknown. The sheets look clean enough, but there are no lockers or anywhere to store bags. There is a pedestal fan in the corner of the room. The door doesn't open or close properly and there is only a lock on the outside of the door.

The shared bathroom screams "run!" There are no doors; they have positioned a clear shower curtain as the main door and also as a shield from the toilet. Trash and dirt are everywhere. It is all open -- the showers next to the toilet and then another overflowing toilet in the corner, with only the clear shower curtain providing any covering, or lack thereof. It is honestly filthy and barely usable.

Common Spaces

There is a pool outside, with a tiny amount of water in it, that doesn't look inviting whatsoever, even in the Mérida heat. There is quite a large outside area with plenty of seating. There is the "lounge room" where the guy working sleeps in a bunk piled with rubbish in the corner, as well as a kitchen/dining area where there are some locals, possibly also workers/owners eating. It was honestly the most sketchy setup we've experienced throughout Central America.

Summary

We're not even being dramatic, just pay an extra few dollars and avoid this nightmare hostel.
