Hostal Casa Chauac ha has the potential to be a good hostel, but it most definitely is not.
The Location
The location is great, just a couple of blocks from both the bus terminal and the main square. You can walk everywhere in Valladolid, so you are never too far from anything; you have the markets and food vendors just around the corner as well as a large supermarket restaurants and bars a couple of blocks away. They do provide free bike hire, so you can easily cycle to the cenotes and around the town.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This hostel seems very new and has the potential to be great, but their listings are misleading; when booking, it states you can choose to either book a bed in a mixed dorm or an eight-bed dorm, There is actually only one dorm, it consists of twelve regular bunks but also has eight double bunks, meaning two people per bed, so at capacity this room could hold twenty-eight people. There is definitely not enough space for twenty-eight people and their belongings in that room. The beds have a good, solid design but the mattresses are horrendous -- some of the worst ever experienced. There is air conditioning (during the evening) and fans, but they can be a bit bright during the night. There are lockers at the bottom of the bunks for personal items but they have missed the mark and not made them large enough for bags.
The bathroom is a whole other experience; they're rarely cleaned and don't often have toilet paper, the showers have zero pressure, and the toilets are so small people literally couldn't fit in some of them to close the door.
Common Spaces
They do have a semi-decent outdoor area, with plenty of seating and umbrellas to avoid the heat, there is a small kitchen to cook and also free filtered water. There is also an inside living-room-type area, but that seems to be where the staff sleep during the day. Breakfast is a plate of fruit and some coffee, but free breakfast is free breakfast.
Summary
The hostel isn't worth the savings, pay the extra few dollars and go somewhere where you can get a good night's sleep and where the staff seem to want you there.
