Once in a blue moon, backpackers encounter hostels where the owners and staff are so genuinely open and friendly that it makes us wish we could stay longer and the hospitality is what makes the difference; to save time researching your accommodation, don't hesitate to book MaiLy Hostel, because it fits into this category.
The Location
In a lively neighbourhood of North Central Huế, there are a cluster of hostels a little more than a bridge length away from the old royal Citadel, Huế's main draw. Conveniently, MaiLy Hostel is positioned here, down a little lane and standing directly opposite Sunshine Hostel. All the bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops are nearby. Step outside and walk to the main street and there is a holiday atmosphere in the air ... for locals, too. Weekends are noisy until midnight. Having a hostel just off the main drag brings benefits -- the shuttle bus from the airport terminates twenty minutes' walk short of the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has a lot of spacious private rooms with en suites and modern and tasteful decoration. The four-bed dorm is snug, but benefits from having an en suite bathroom. The bathrooms have great water pressure and the rooms have comfortable mattresses, solid privacy curtains, electric sockets, and reading lights. There are small lockers in the room.
The six-bed dorm is similar, but actually feels like it has has more elbow room. Fans, air conditioning, and effective mosquito screens all work well. For backpacking couples desiring a break from dorms, the luxurious private double rooms are a bargain.
Common Spaces
When guests aren't chatting in their dorms, they can go to the small lounge and dining area near reception. That said, most don't spend much time sitting around -- there seem to be three-day weekends in Huế and lots to see, do, ... and eat; guests go exploring together rather spontaneously. Tour information is on display and can be booked here, as can bicycles and motorbikes. A selection of travel guides and a variety of other books, novels, and magazines rest in a book case. Drinks and snacks from a menu are available. There is a small terrace and upstairs balconies for the smokers.
Summary
People staying in the dorms get to know each other and share tips and travel experiences. Most are not just hitting the top-five destinations in Vietnam, but are instead real travelers getting off the beaten track to enjoy the nature and landscapes. Guests arriving early morning get offered a free breakfast and are checked into their beds just as soon as a bed can be made clean and available for them. All round, this family-run hostel satisfies on the highest level.
