ELtravo Hostel - Udaipur is one of the cheapest hostels you will find in Udaipur, however, what you get also reflects this standard. As it's far from the historic centre and hidden on the fourth floor of a residential building, everything here is pretty basic and kept to the minimum. Moreover, most of the guests are Indian so you will probably miss your typical backpacker hostel's atmosphere here.

The Location

ELtravo is probably the hostel located the closest to the train and bus stations of Udaipur amongst all the hostels available in the city. Therefore, it can be an ok place to crash for a night after a late train or before an early bus. However, it is definitely too far away from all the sights of the city, therefore, you would have to take a rickshaw to get to them. What is more problematic, however, is that it is extremely hard to find. There are absolutely no signs to indicate the location of the place and even people living next door have no idea about the existence of the hostel. Your best bet is to get to Khrisnalila Regency and walk past the building to the four-floor residential building with a swastika sign on it. Take the elevator to the top floor and as you get out, you will see a hand-made ELtravo sign next to the door. If you tell the staff upon your arrival that the place is impossible to find, they will just shrug their shoulders.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The place only offers a few dorm rooms and no privates. The dorms are rather crammed and the blankets are not thick enough. It is rarely full so you have a good chance of getting a bottom bunk. However, there are no individual plugs for the respective beds so you will have to leave your devices in a place far from you if you want to charge them. At 11 p.m., there is a strict lights-off policy, which is probably a good thing, but there are no bedside lamps for those who want to read longer. The decoration of the en suite bathroom is rather old fashioned and the sinks are a bit rusty and not too clean either.

Common Spaces

Guests are free to use the common kitchen, even if it has hardly any equipment inside. However, if you would like to have some hot water, the staff will be happy to make it for you and if you are lucky, they will offer you free chais as well. Apart from the small reception area, another place to socialise is the rooftop terrace. Although there are only one table and a few chairs to sit on here, the view over the city palace and Pichola Lake are rather impressive.

Summary

All in all, ELtravo is an all right choice for a night or two if you need to be near the train or bus station. However, in order to make the most of your time in Udaipur and enjoy all that the historic center has to offer, maybe it is better to pick another place.
