Downtown Inn Kyoto is a very clean hostel located between Nishiki Market and the Imperial palace, so there are many restaurants and convenience stores nearby, just five minutes from the metro station. Each bed area is quite big and there are huge lockers (but no padlocks are given, so you might bring your own). There isn’t a proper common area with sofas and dining tables, but has a mini-kitchen and the basics (laundry, amenities, and free coffee and tea), so it’s a good option for staying, but it's not very social.
The Location
The nearest Metro Station -- Karasuma Oike -- is five minutes away. It is a bit tricky to find if you haven’t seen a photo of the building, since there’s not a proper sign outside, just a small sign. It is located nearby Nishiki Market, so many restaurants, convenience stores, and shopping malls are close. The Imperial Palace is a fifteen-minute walk away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The guest gets a small paper with the general instructions. There aren’t door locks for any door, and there's no curfew. There are several types of shared dorms, including a six-bed, mixed dormitory; a sixteen-bed, mixed dormitory; and a six-bed, mixed dormitory with twin bed. In the shared dorms, the bed capsule with individual futon and a big locker on the back has enough space. though no padlock is offered. There are hangers and the sides of the locker can be used as a shelf. There is a wooden area right next to the bed, which can be used for placing personal items as well.
The toilets and shower are very clean and big. The shower is a proper room with a dressing room area and has hot shower. There are hangers as well and amenities including shampoo and body soap. There are slippers and hair dryers available for the guest’s convenience. Also shared amenities such as toothpaste are available.
Common Spaces
This hostel is located on the sixth and seventh floors. There’s a lift on the second floor, but you have to carry your luggage to this floor. There’s the reception with maps and slippers; here you can leave your luggage as well from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., which is the reception’s schedule. For early check-in, the guest has to pay. The kitchen has a kettle, microwave, and cups but neither an electric stove nor fridge so you can’t cook your own meals. Free coffee and tea are available twenty-four/seven. In this area, there’s just a long bar, there isn’t a proper common area with sofas or dining tables. There is a washing and drying machine in both floors.
Summary
This is a good option for having a chill stay; it's not very social as there’s no proper common area, but it is quite clean and has the basics. It is a half kitchen, so you can’t cook but there are cups, kettle, and a microwave, but no fridge.
