Makarov Hostel Tretyakovka is located around central Moscow, about twenty-five minutes' walking away from the Kremlin. It is in a building with three floors and it is mostly used by Russian travelers or people living there for a long period.
The Location
As mentioned, it is quite well located in the big city of Moscow, but still requires at least a twenty-minute walk to reach the main attractions. It is located on the island of Ostrov Bolotnyy, which doesn’t have any metro or bus station, so public transport is not the most convenient way to move around. From the airports in general it is up to sixty minutes with taxi, depending on which airport.
Rooms and Bathrooms
It offers both privates and dorms. Dorms are made of bunk beds with curtains for each bed so you can have some privacy. Privates are located on the top floor and they are very small and get hot in summer, as air conditioning is unavailable (heating is available in winter). Lockers are available for dorms but you need to use your own lock. Bathrooms are located on the second floor and the basement. However at the second floor there are only toilets and sinks, so to have a shower you have to always go down to the basement (with no elevator and walking in front of the reception). The hostel is generally clean.
Common Spaces
There are no other common spaces available than the kitchen. The only area where people meet is the common kitchen, which has also some tables and a sofa, and a TV. The cooking area is quite large, and pots and pans are not of the first quality. There are two fridges but they tend to be always full. A great point is a free cold and hot water dispenser, as tap water is not drinkable in Moscow. The vibe of the hostel is almost nonexistent for a foreigner; in fact, the hostel seems to attract mostly Russian people who in general don’t speak English, and many people stay there for a long time. The average age is higher than usual for a hostel, with many people who are over forty staying there.
Summary
It is an ok place to stay in Moscow that's really only useful to sleep and explore, but the kitchen is a great advantage. It's totally not suitable to those looking to meet people and to experience a fun environment. It is annoying to always walk down two or three floors to have a shower.
