Get to know Torremolinos (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Torremolinos.

Torremolinos is an Andalusian coastal town in the south of Spain, belonging to Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun). As you can imagine from its name, it's an ideal spot for beach vacations, to soak up the sun and surf, windsurf, or kayak.

Being a place by the sea and originally a fishing village before the tourism boost back in the 1920s, fresh fish and seafood is plentiful in the local restaurants. "Fritada Malaguena" is the typical dish and includes a variety of fried fish in one big caloric but really tasty platter. There is no shortage of Torremolinos hostels and other accommodation parallel to the sea. The closer you get to the first line of the water, the more expensive it will be, but do keep in mind that many places offer a view out to the ocean, even if they are not in first line.

Torremolinos was extremely popular in the eighties as vacation destination for Spanish people wanting to escape the city life and hit the beach during the summer. Apart from Spanish, Northern Europeans would seek this sunny place too, for a change of scenery, as a warmer location compared to their colder, gloomier countries. Although during the nineties, this destination became less popular amongst tourists (probably due to the previous fame and consequent overload of visitors) it is now getting revived, with a younger and hipper crowd.

Torremolinos prides itself on being a very gay-friendly destination -- you will easily find flyers advertising gay bars and clubs in town, as well as gay pride magazines with free distribution, available in coffee shops and restaurants.
