Get to know Mahé (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Mahé.

Mahé, Seychelles, is the biggest in island in the Seychelles and port of entry to the Seychelles for all independent travelers. Seychelles is a country that many dream of visiting -- it's home to those postcard-worthy scenes of beautiful, white-sand beaches with turquoise water. Mahé is the island that is the easiest to visit, but it's certainly not less attractive than other islands. Mahé is the island where the international airport is located and the only port of entry for foreign independent travelers.

Like everywhere in the Seychelles, options for hostels in Mahé, Seychelles are extremely limited, and other accommodations that try to attract budget travelers or typical backpackers' accommodation with a hostel vibe or dorm rooms will be difficult to find as well. Budget accommodation is also hard to find and travelers on a very tight budget may not even find an accommodation that fits their budget at all.

Victoria is the capital of the Seychelles and is located on the east coast, about ten minutes north of the airport. This is the only city on the island, although it still feels like walking around a town when you are there. There are not many sites to visit in Victoria, but if you do like to see some cultural sites, this is the place to go.

Mahé is a mountainous island and as soon as you leave the coast, you will climb steep into the mountain. The surroundings are very green and rainforest-like. It is a beautiful drive and worth going for a hike in the national park.

The main attraction of Mahé -- and the Seychelles in general -- however are the beaches. Postcard-like beaches can be found all over the island. The west and the south coast are the most beautiful on Mahé. However, even if you do not book a accommodation on the west or south coast, the travel distance is short. Mahé is a small island, buses run frequently to anywhere on the island for a very small price, and in about one hour you can reach the other side of the island. So if you are on a tight budget and do not find any cheap hotel or Mahé, Seychelles hostel in the place you prefer, you can consider booking an accommodation elsewhere on the island and use public transport to get to your destination of first choice for the day.
