I loved Portugal. I desperately want to go back. Research on it, find out what you want to do. English isn't spoken quite as wide as it is in other European countries. In the south the Algarve area they know more English there as it is more touristy. You *could* go on a tour, but I think you would miss out on half the fun of discovery. Eating out was fun because we usually couldn't read the menu so our meals were always random (and the food was so good). They don't have street signs or anything like that, so if you were thinking about driving just keep that in mind. I hear train travel is quite affordable. As for things to do Porto was great. I did the Sandeman tour and port tasting. Not far outside of Lisbon is Sintra which has a fantastic castle that is a must-see. The south has a very pretty coastline.
