Get to know Bandung (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Bandung.

Bandung is a city on the island of Java, in between Smatra and Bali, in Indonesia. There isn't much point in coming to Bandung unless you want to visit the nearby area of Tangkuban Prahu volcano, which you can reach from a beautiful forest walk in about two-and-a-half hours.

If you want to spend some time in the city, you can head to the town square –- Alun-alun –- and from there go to Gedung Merdeka building in Jalan Asia-Afrika. It has a small museum with free entry that explains the first Asia-Africa conference. Nearby you also have the Gedung State building at Jalan Diponegoro and a few houses after you can find the amazing Geographical Museum that will leave you astonished with many fossils that will take you back in time, from dinosaur skeletons to the most important piece of the museum -- the world-famous Java Man. For shopping and walking around, you have two great streets -- Jalan Cihampelas (also known as Jeans Street) and Jalan Braga. The first one is the place for factory outlets and cheap clothes, while the second one is the chic shopping boulevard.

The best way to arrive in Bandung is probably by train, as the train station is near all the budget accommodation and the city center. There is also an airport just three kilometers away with plenty of taxis on arrival. By bus, you can get connections to all major cities in Java Island.

There aren't many hostels in Bandung. Be sure to book one of Bandung's hostels for the first night in advance as in high season there can be few beds available. Is also important that you try to ensure that breakfast is included in the room price.
