Get to know Zhangjiajie (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Zhangjiajie.

Zhangjiajie can be a bit of a mouthful, but don’t worry -- your jaw will likely be dropped for most of your visit here, thanks to the sights. Zhangjiajie is the access point to the karst peaks of Wulingyuan, one of the most unique and majestic natural sights not only in Hunan, but in China. Choosing your Zhangjiajie hostel may seem overwhelming, but generally your choice is between Zhangjiajie town itself and Wulingyuan, by the park entrance. Basically, don’t stress too much! Either way, the park is easily accessible and you will be flying like an avatar in no time! Park tickets are good to use for three days, which gives a good indication of the time required to see most of the park.

For those choosing to stay in Zhangjiajie City, most Zhangjiajie hostels are within close distance to the bus and train stations, with the airport only twenty minutes out of town. The pros of staying in a Zhangjiajie City hostel are the close amenities, shops, and local tuji restaurants. Also, your Zhangjiajie hostel will be able to help you arrange a visit to the Tianmen Mountain, accessed via a seven-kilometer cable car, with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. When accessing the Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan parks, your Zhangjiajie hostel will certainly have information on the requisite bus stops and the difference in time for the various routes -- generally ranging from forty-five minutes to two hours. Do note, there are multiple entrances and routes available. But have no fear, just ask your Zhangjiajie hostel to describe the various options on entering the park. For those more inclined to let someone else do the hard work, most Zhangjiajie hostels will be able to arrange tours to the park, including transportation. Either way, you’ll certainly make the most out of your visit to Zhangjiajie!

Staying by the park’s entrance certainly has its perks too. Should you choose to stay in Zhangjiajie Village, you will still have a range of restaurants and shops nearby, albeit a smaller range. Despite a longer distance from Zhangjiajie’s transport options (train, bus, plane), you will be able to access the park itself in a shorter time. More importantly, the surrounding Wulingyuan mountains will be right at your footstep. Waking up every morning to peaks like this cannot be underestimated!

Zhangjiajie is extremely popular within China, so Zhangjiajie hostels tend to be pre-booked during peak holidays and the summer months. This is one place in China where pre-bookings are very much required! So pack your hiking boots and get prepared to navigate above the clouds!
