Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire, England, is home to some incredible history and prestige. There are two different towns with Oxfordshire, England hostels where you can stay -- Bicester and Oxford. Oxford is home to the oldest university in the world and you will find some amazing old buildings here that have formed the sets for some very popular movies such as the "Harry Potter" series and the door and lamppost from Narnia in "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe." It was also home to some of the most incredible minds from throughout academic history, especially with literature, law, and politics. You can take a free walking tour and learn about these stories from a guide, or you can feel free to wander at your own pace to explore the city. The walking tour is definitely recommended, though, as it gives you a background to the place that makes it a little more real; usually the tour is given by an Oxford student.

To get here to Oxford, you can take a bus from near the London Victoria Coach Station and it will take approximately two hours to get there. If you know you are going and book well in advance, fares can be fairly cheap through Megabus.com. If you decide to go on the day, though, buses from Oxford Tube leave every fifteen minutes or so. The train is only marginally faster and a little bit more expensive if you are on a schedule with no time to waste.

Once you arrive in Oxford, there are a few Oxfordshire, England hostels where you can stay, and most of them are within walking distance of the bus station and anything you will need during your stay here. The town is small and walkable, so getting around on foot is easy. There are a few different supermarkets, and loads of restaurants and cafes, but keep in mind that things in Oxford can close fairly early, especially on the weekends.

If you were wanting to head to Bicester Village and check out some of the popular shopping there, there are buses that leave from Oxford city centre. Bicester Village is known for its discounted designer stores. There are also a few parks to check out here. If you are a backpacker on a budget and don't have the money to drop on a Prada bag, it isn't really worth the visit. Save your time, money, and efforts for the gloriousness of Oxford town instead.
