A very mixed bag
High on a hill you may want to take a cab from the bus station if you have luggage (local cabbies will demand up to 6 JD, 1 is normal,, 2 a very good price -- don't give in ridiculous overcharging is rife in this town). Reception area makes a good impression. Outdoors is a dining room tent. The basement dorm I stayed in is cheap at 7 JD (8,5 Euros, or 10 Dollars). But even for that one can expect in Jordan something better. Towels are not provided. A large room with 8 beds along one wall (1 bunk) all of hem less than one foot apart. Two more beds lengthwise. No storage area, no other furniture, wardrobe or locker. The small bath/toilet-combi smelt of sewage. No cleaning or day two, no further toilet paper provided. Hot water available from 5.00-8.00 and 17.00-20.00 only, which is okay in Jordanian summer, but not November. And they actually do turn of the electricity as well (fuse is in the box in the hallway) during the day and after midnight -- thus one has to find one's bottom in the dark (most people will be able to do that). That floor-covering (I dare not call it carpeting, mainly loose pieces thrown on) is ancient and has a grimy feel. The sheets are well worn, torn in places and equally from Nabatean times. Mattresses are foam rubber with torn covers, pillows rectangular foam-rubber pieces with covers on. On the plus side the evening buffet -- not haute cuisine, but solid home cooked food, simply presented. Breakfast not much different but overpriced as is the laundry charge. The owners are surely, the helpers untrained, but this is budget accommodation after all. This review is based on a 2 night stay in a basement dorm, where the WiFi signal does not reach. Refurbishment in the upper parts of the building is ongoing, there might be better rooms available. Where I slept rates 2 stars for accommodation only, bonus points for the decent evening meal, and the pick-up service from the Petra gate.
Average Place ...
The internet was very slow. The buffet was cold. The service was average. The distance of this Hostel to Petra is a cab ride. Walking is not recommended. Nobody explained to us that you need your Hostel receipt in order to pay the $50 JD for entering Petra, otherwise you will pay $90 JD for 1 day. I would stay within walking distance.
