JGH Tokyo Reviews

JGH Tokyo is a family-run hostel in Kawaguchi in the Saitama Prefecture, right next to the city of Tokyo. The hostel -- and the suburb itself -- offer a calm environment in which to pass the nights while visiting the vibrant and hectic city center, with access to free Wi-Fi, modest but sufficient facilities, and the endless fond character of its owners.

The Location

The hostel is located in Kawaguchi city, one of the many different towns that compose the Saitama Prefecture, known for being one of the main working-class suburbs of Tokyo. Its atmosphere has nothing to do with the hectic environment of the big city, with tiny streets that barely witness the passage of cars and preschool kids playing in its parks early in the morning.

It takes around one hour to get to the very center of Tokyo, with constant trains passing from 5 a.m. until midnight, and it is indeed mandatory to take into the account the price of the transportation when considering this hostel. There are several convenience stores close to the hostel as well a supermarket no more than five minutes' walking away, which offers great discounted meal deals in the evening. Other interesting spots around the hostel include an onsen, several local cuisine restaurants, and a walk by the Arakawa River crowded with baseball players on Sundays.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are four dormitory rooms available and a few more private ones, all of them offering futons (either on a bunk-bed structure or on the floor) as their bed option. There is no choice for en suite, as all the toilet rooms are shared, with one of them on every floor. The bathroom is located on the first floor, with a small changing room right before the proper bath room.

Common Spaces

The hostel is pretty much built in a family house, and therefore there is no such thing as big hall spaces for the guests to hang around or spacious dining rooms. It provides a small kitchen on the first floor and some kitchen utilities as well on the second floor aisle, and you can eat (or just sit around) at the tables of both floor aisles. These aisles can be considered as the only real meeting point for guests to know each other and chat -- while they are small, they are good enough for sharing some beers before heading to bed.

Summary

JGH Hostel is the right choice if you are looking for an alternative to the expensive accommodation in the busy city center of Tokyo. You will not only appreciate the calm of its neighborhood and the friendly and close environment that it provides to its guests, but most importantly, you will come to love the kindness of Mieko-san and Yoshi-san, which have been running the hostel by themselves for more than a decade -- and don't seem to be willing to stop doing so, despite their ages!

Location and Contact

Location

• [from Narita aairport]
• We recommend the Keisei Limited Express train as it is half the price of other services. Also, there is not too much time difference regarding your arrival at Tokyo. Please purchase the 1030JPY ticket at the airport and take the limited express train to Nippori Sta. This should take about 51 min, but please note that the last train to leave Narita is at 22:41 p.m. Next, transfer at Nippori Sta. to the JR Keihin Tohoku line towards Omiya/Minami Urawa. Purchase the ticket for 170JPY to go to the JR Kawaguchi Station.
• From central Tokyo:
• It is also 216 JPY from the JR Ueno, Shinjuku, and Ikebukuro Stations on the JR lines. From Ikebukuro and Shinjuku Stations, please take the JR Saikyo line to JR Akabane Station and transfer there to the JR Keihin Tohoku line for JR Kawaguchi Station. From JR Ueno Station, Keihin Tohoku line will take you directly to the JR Kawaguchi Station. This is the cheapest transportation from central Tokyo.
• From Haneda International Airport:
• 1). Take the monorail Haneda line to Hamamatsucho station(490JPY) and transfer to JR Keihin Tohoku line(Major bule train)(towards Omiya/Minami Urawa) to Kawaguchi station.(310JPY)
• This option is approximately 60min, total 800JPY
• 2).Alternatively, take Kekyu line Haneda to Shinagawa station(410JPY) and transfer to JR Keihin Tohoku line(towards Omiya/Minami Urawa) to Kawaguchi station(390JPY).
• This option is approximately 70min, total 800JPY.
• From Kawaguchi Station,
• You can take a taxi to the hotel, which takes 3 min and cost 750 JPY, or walk 950m from the station.
• Get out the west exit of Kawaguchi Sta, and walk along the rail road, with the tracks on your right side, passing a cake factory, a post office, and turn left at a public bath called “Kirakuyu”. Walk another 30M, and you will see the hotel on the right side of the street. It is a green four-story building.
