The Funky Dodo Backpackers Hostel Reviews

Location, facilities, vibe, owners -- somehow everything at The Funky Dodo Backpackers Hostel is great. This hostel is a perfect storm of excellence!

The Location

Even in the small town of Hopkins, Funky Dodo still has a pretty solid location, as it is close to the town's major intersection where buses/cars will drop off travelers as well as having the out-of-town buses stopping directly in front of the hostel. There is a good supermarket just across the road and a few cafes and restaurants just down the road with more options further afield. Parking is readily available on the street.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms come in four bunk-bed options and are simply excellent. There are curtains (for the lower bunk at least), dual power points, and a reading light for each bed with lockers located directly under the beds -- whoever designed these dorms did their homework. The dorms themselves do not lock, but as the in-room lockers are large enough to fit all but the heaviest-packed traveler's possessions in them and there is a twenty-four/seven security presence, this isn't too big of a concern. There are also private rooms available, which follow the same trend (comfortable, convenient, well-equipped) but are lockable.

Bathrooms and showers are also excellent with a great design sense. There are four sinks are located in a central column with four showers and four toilets arrayed around this central column. All facilities are clean and spacious with hooks and shelves for clothing and toiletries.

Common Spaces

Unsurprisingly, common spaces are excellent too. The ground level area is divided into a clean, well-stocked kitchen that is easily navigable despite appearing a little small; a dining area that is a great place to start up conversations with other travelers; and the sandy hammock area which needs no hype (sand, hammocks, good times). Upstairs, there is a seating area as well, which affords decent views of the surrounds. There is also a good-sized book exchange.

Summary

It is always great to find a hostel that has gone the extra ten percent necessary to turn a good hostel into a great hostel; it is all about attention to the little details. There are lots of different hang-out areas without ever cutting any of them off entirely, power points above mini shelves for every bed, and owners/staff that actively engage with guests and go the extra mile. It's a shining example of hosteling.
