False Advertising/Terrible Management

Manager was rude, hostile, and unkind; hostelers sat around exchanging stories of how awful he had been to them. Beds were broken and old -- our boards kept falling out and we fell through to floor! We paid for eight bed; were put in full ten bed (with broken bed). Site says "free breakfast" -- not mentioned at check-in and not done on Sundays apparently. Site says $20 bus to airport; when you arrive, signs say $40-65 dependent on number of passengers. Site says "free shuttle to city"; there is none. $20 cash key deposit not advertised. So-called "free wifi" and "free drink on first night" are only if you do positive review of hostel with five stars with photos of self enjoying it on Facebook, otherwise, no wifi code or welcome drink for you. The place is so terrible, they have to bribe you to pretend you enjoyed being there! Traveled the world -- worst place I've stayed at.

A pretty bad experience all round

On arrival to Manly Harbour Backpackers we were pretty annoyed to find that they had given our reserved Private Double room away. Ok, it was a busy weekend with all hostels/hotels in the Brisbane area sold out but that's no excuse to just give reserved rooms away to people who have just turned up on the day. I got the sense that the management really didn't know what they were doing. We were given a double bed in a a shared dorm and a free beer as compensation. This is the good thing about the hostel, they have a decent bar with a nice balcony. This, however, is where the positives end. The beds were uncomfortable with wafer-thin mattresses, breakfast was basically a group of ravenous men crowding over a loaf of bread, there wasn't enough cutlery (I saw at least 10 people eating cereal or spreading peanut butter with forks), the bathrooms were dirty, the water cold and smelling a bit like they had pumped it up from the harbour itself, the decor brash and tacky ... the list goes on. I'm not a fussy traveler, I have stayed in a million hostels across the world and can withstand a lot, so I can safely say that Many Harbour Backpackers is the pits!

Too far away, not clean, poor kitchen.

The hostel description does not mention enough just how far away it is from the CBD. It's forty minutes by train, then a 10 minute walk from there. THERE IS NO FREESHUTTLE BUS INTO THE CITY. The train costs 6 dollars for an adult if you pay for each ticket separately, so whatever money you save going with Manly you pay in train tickets. It was very noisy one of our nights, with a loud party/karaoke in the parking lot. The kitchen is also poorly equipped -- there are pretty much no bowls or cups, the cutlery is falling apart, and it's all just a mess. Not entirely clean either. It was definitely more a place for long term backpackers as opposed to temporary stays, so that may have added to our discomfort. Otherwise, the owners are friendly, but that can only make up for so much.

Loved it!

Great place to stay! the new owners are lovely. when we arrived we hadnt booked the room properly, instead of sending us away they gave us the managers room for the night, at no extra cost! the managers brother who was staying there at the time said he couldnt let a six-month pregnant woman sleep on the floor, when he had a bed! we were very grateful! only downside is friday and saturday nights, there is a pub the opposite side of the road, if you're staying roadside you will hear it! try to get the room on the other side. Far away from the city but right next to the beach. $5 meals cooked by a bloody good cook! room cleaned every time someone checked out, which is better than some more expensive places we have stayed in. had a really great time and would come again!
