The Bunker - McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala

The Bunker - McLeod Ganj is an ideal place for the lovers of nature. As it's in one of the highest positions amongst backpackers, it is a great base if you are planning to do one of the hikes starting from here or maybe conquer Triund. The hostel is run by a bunch of young intellectuals who come up with amazing programmes every day; for example, you can join a short nature walk in the mornings if you manage to get up early.

The Location

It is important to point out that McLeodGanj is not in Dharamsala. It is about six kilometres further on a steep uphill road. If you are adventurous, you can undertake the climb; however, do not attempt it with heavy backpacks! There are regular buses connecting the two places and you won't have any trouble finding tuk tuks either. However, from McLeodGanj center, Bunker Hostel is still a good forty minutes' hike uphill. It is possible to find a tuk tuk for this ride too, but you might still have to walk some of the way as the roads are not great here and the main road leading up is all stairs. It is better if you bring some supplies with you, as there are not many shops or restaurants around the hostel even if they offer a limited choice of dishes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are super nice here with big bunks, and the beds are spacious and comfortable. The dorm is spotlessly clean and very thick blankets are provided to keep you warm in the cold. The rooms are en suite and the bathrooms are huge and offer unlimited hot water.

Common Spaces

As the hostel is out of the centre near the forest, it offers a massive outdoor territory around the hostel for guests to enjoy. It is great to sip your morning coffee outside in the garden or chill on the terrace taking in the amazing panorama from the hostel. The top of the hostel is a cosy socialisation area with cushions, low tables, and board games. In the winter, a tent is constructed around it to keep it warm.

Summary

Bunker is a great place for the lovers of the outdoors and it does a great job at bringing likeminded people together. It is quite far from the centre of McLeodGanj so if your plan is to tour the sights in a short time, then this place is definitely not ideal for you. However, if you just want to take the time to relax and enjoy the view near the Indian Himalayas, you will love this place!
