Manor House in central Phnom Penh styles itself as a "boutique hotel," and it is easy to see why. The look of the building is more akin to that of a three-star hotel; the atmosphere is comfortable and the facilities are opulent. It is medium-sized, with space for around eighty to a hundred guests.
The Location
Manor House is located about five minutes' walk west of the Independence Monument in downtown Phnom Penh. Most of the tourist sites of the city are within half an hour's walk, or a ten-minute tuk tuk ride from the hostel. The National Museum of Cambodia and the Genocide Museum are both within a twenty-minute walk and the Royal Palace is about fifteen minutes away. The hostel is located on a short, quiet street in a busy area, so external noise is rarely a problem for those trying to sleep.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are well appointed and have adequate space. Many have en suite bathrooms with toilets and showers. These are cleaned daily. The water pressure is quite low in some of the bathrooms, but there is enough to take basic showers.
Each guest has a locker and must supply his or her own padlock, though these are available for purchase from reception. The beds are large enough and fairly luxurious; each has its own reading light and two power points. Each bed also has a fan for use during the day. The dorms also have air conditioning. The beds do not have curtains, however, so there is strictly limited privacy.
Common Spaces
The principal common space in the hostel is a large pool area with a bar and some communal seating. There is a pool table. Guests can buy (slightly expensive) food and drink from the bar and restaurant. However, the hostel has officious notices in the communal areas stating that guests may not bring food or drink onto the hostel's property. There is a balcony upstairs with chairs for those who do not fancy the bar scene. The music from the bar is generally kept at a discreet level, so guests trying to sleep in the rooms will usually not be bothered.
Summary
This hostel is neither particularly quiet nor a party hostel -- it is somewhere in between. Its facilities are for the most part excellent. There is good Wi-Fi throughout the property. The lack of a guest kitchen and the officious food and drink policy are the only real downsides.
