Hostel Roma Inn is a small hostel with several mixed, male, or female dorms with shared bathrooms (even though they're advertised as en suite); they're all air conditioned and inclusive of free breakfast, towel, and Wi-Fi. It is spread over one floor in two buildings, with a large courtyard social space at the front of the properties.
The Location
The hostel is located about a twenty-five-minute walk from the small town centre, so it's a little out of the way, but they can organise transport for you from the reception desk upon request. They will even pick you up from the downtown bus stop for free when you arrive -- even at 3 a.m. if required. It's very useful if you've come from an overnight bus and don't fancy the walk in the dark.
The closest restaurant is a ten-minute walk; it's longer to get to a convenience store. They sell a small selection of drinks at the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are clean, spacious and bright; they all have large bunk beds with comfortable mattresses, large lockers, power points, and lights. You are provided with a door key.
The bathrooms have nine toilet cubicles and eight shower cubicles. This is plenty, and they all have hot water, although the standards of cleanliness are sub par and you may find squashed flies and dirt on the walls, which appear to be made from plywood. They all feature body-wash dispensers and towel rails/hooks.
Common Spaces
The courtyard to the front of the property is a very nice social space, with several tables and chairs, plus bongos, guitars, and a tambourine. Here, they serve the breakfast, which is an omelette and a pancake, plus there is free tea, coffee, and drinking water available all day. The light a bonfire each evening, which creates a lovely, easy, social atmosphere in which to meet other travelers. The guests staying here consist of travelers -- many soon to embark on treks to Inle Lake (you can book these through the hostel).
Summary
The negatives here are the location and the bathroom cleanliness; however, for one of the cheapest bed prices in town, the atmosphere, and other facilities, it's a very good option. They will even give you a half-price night if you're due to arrive at a ridiculous hour in the morning and don't fancy walking the streets until check-in time.
